Can anyone advise: Golf 2.0L FSI v

I have oil leaking from my Golf 2.0 FSI sump. I have been told by the dealership that I require a new sump gasket at approx $700aus including labor. My car is out of warranty I bought it new, has never been serviced or touched by anyone other than the VW dealership I purchased it from. My confusion is this; I asked a friend who is a mechanic for land rover if he would be able to do the job, he said no worries at all. He then informed me that he had inquired about a gasket for my sump to be told they do not have them ??? He had a look at the sump today and he said there is one there, but he reckons they are not factory fitted. So my confusion is are they or aren't they..... If not how or why would one be on there without me knowing?

Hope someone can give me some clarification.

do they use sealer instead of a gasket?most car manufacturers nowadays dont use many gaskets in their engines.
