Barry Scott
Hi All, Anyone know anything or know anyone who they could ask about water ingress on a 2005 Ford Focus Mk 2? I've been googling the problem and it seems to be a regular common fault but tried all the fixes I can read but still got a leak! Don't know where the water's getting in as even when soaking the car with a hose, it won't leak on command. The photo below shows in yellow where the side carpeting has had visable water droplets on it (although never soaking at all) and the red shows where a pool of water collects under the floor carpet! People have said it comes through the fixings for the light clusters or from badly welded boot lid hinges but both of these I have cleaned up and put silicone sealant around and still water comes in. I've also looked at the fixings for the roof spoiler as this may be another cause people have said but found nothing. I have taken the side carpet away and a lot of the trim but can't see anything suspect or evidence where the water may be tracking from. Just wondered if anyone might know another cause before I have to dismantle the rear side of the car completely to find this fecking leak!
cruiser647
Keep the boot untrimmed, then when water gets in, you might/should be able to see the water trails. Worth a punt?
pontyslapper
Get in the boot with a feck off big torch - then have somebody outside with a hose and let rip with the water. You might have to stay in there a while as it maybe pooling somewhere and capilliary action may be taking place - this is a git to resolve as the leak is always miles away from where logic tells you it should be! I'd immediately suspect the rubber seal around the boot - maybe worth getting it off and reseating it after putting a bead of the silicone sealant that 'doesn't go off' ie stays 'sticky and pliable' around the area that is exposed by the removed rubber seal. Had a similar problem on an old L reg escort once. Edited May 3, 2010 by pontyslapper
pontyslapper
Another option is to remove the boot liner and line the offending area with kitchen roll - yep, kitchen roll, then use masking tape to stick it to any surfaces and around the lumps and bumps. Now the trick bit - kids felt tips or whiteboard markers - draw lines along the 'high points' and suspect areas - the water will force the colours in the ink to run, usually away from the source of the water so that you can see roughly which direction the ingress is coming from. robby
Is it a 3 door? the area marked looks to be under the rear windows, try the hose in that area
Barry Scott
It's 5 door and that kitchen roll trick sounds interesting and think I'll give it try. Had the hose on and all over the car for 20 mins today and no sign of getting it to leak. Rain yesterday and pool of water this morning!
cruiser647
When the pool of water appeared, had you driven the car at all? Your water is the wrong type!

Not driven anywhere so must be rain, although I might not have noticed it for a while as it's under the carpet and not really obvious unless you lift it up. cruiser647 said: Your water is the wrong type! ... your right, I must be using the cheap stuff that won't leak! Tipex
Pop round mine, we'll jet wash the fecker with some Evian, that'll do the trick!
Barry Scott
Well, it's only taken five months and the hot summer, so it sort of went away, but finally traced the leak (with a bit of help from Tipex and holding the hose yesterday ) to be the passenger side rear quarter light window! Bugger is that their bonded in from the outside with no visible sign of the sealant (no rubber surrounds) so not really sure how to go abouts trying to re-seal it other than smash it as I doubt it will come off easily and replace with new! Any advice would be great! Edited October 11, 2010 by Barry Scott

theduisbergkid
Howdy. Can you mask the inside of the glass with newspaper, then pressure wash from the outside, to pinpoint exactly where the seal has perished ? If you can spot where, try some of that bathroom silicone sealer (carefully, it's nasty stuff), pref black or mix in some black dye). Good luck. Failing that, "Autoglass repair, Autoglass replace" as the advert says...

It's tracking slightly somewhere and coming through a opening in the double skin about an inch away. Black sealant is probably the only option, just very tight to get behind the edge of the glass without making a right fecking mess on the bodywork! Be fun trying thou!!! Tipex
Like Barry says, somehow the water is getting between the inner and outer panel, so although it gets in through the glass seal, it doesn't come into the car by the window, it runs between the panels and drops out of a hole on the rear pillar. I really wouldn't bother with silicone etc, it'll look ****ing gash, ring autoglass and see what they quote you, or alternatively I can smash it for you one night! Barry Scott
Autoglass quote £84.01 to remove and re-fix the window... or do I get Tipex to 'vandalise' it while I'm tucked up asleep in my bed.
oobuc5
use clear glazing silicone [tool station £2.50 ] =last a life time !
focussed
Hi, there appear to be many sources of Focus (ours is 2005My) Boot leaks. Mine was at the very back of the gutter trim (hidden) at the topcorner the tailgate opening. Water of course was coming in right at the back of the car after running down bodywork and trim. Tipex
No worse than VAG cars filling the scuttle up with water and fecking all the electrics! At least with the Focus, 99.9% of owners won't even know they have a leak, only the ones who regularly strip the lining of their boot out!
Barry Scott
Spot on with both accounts above. Forgot to update this thread. Did manage to find someone to remove the window for er... cash and re-fix it which made no difference to the leak! Turned out 'as above' to be the join at the end of the roof gutter between the two panels. Small bit of body filler, touch up paint over and jobs been a good'en ever since! Zientific
Seems like this could be my problem on my 2010 focus zetec s! and after hours of trying to locate the leak, ending up having to strip the boot trim and run water down. it drips in from a leak on the roof gutter by the looks. How do you go about removing the plastic strip without knackering it?
