ESP fault

Oh lovely, our 2006 A8 just beeped and said "ESP fault"

I'll pull the error logs off it tonight and see what it thinks is wrong. Then I guess I'll find out if the third party warranty I bought is any good!

These in the logs I dumped might be related.

Looks like you have a dodgy brake light switch! Nothing too serious (though it could mean you don't have any brake lights!!). I had this on my old A4 and it was about £30 all in for a new one and fitting (about 30 mins at my local Audi specialist).

OK, home again, grabbed error codes, and the only relevant one is the Brake Light Switch one.

Replacement is 1K2 945 511 RDW and it's a heady £8.13+VAT. The old style ones were a bear to fit, but the new one seems much easier. I guess I'll give it a go.

There is a Quiescent Current Stage x error or two, which have come back from before, and some suggest that the battery monitor needs a reflash. I haven't yet decided who to get to service my car, the main stealer or the local indy. If the former, I may get this done as it reportedly helps if you plan to park the car for 2-3 weeks.

My wife has already commented that the VCDS lead is starting to pay for itself. This is *VERY* encouraging particularly given what I said when she called and reported the "ESP fault"; I told her she'd been forgetting to use the indicators and the car was reminding her that other road users aren't psychic!

The one under the steering wheel. Well really the one above the driver's feet so I can get to the brake light switch, but I'm not sure if this is a separate piece. It seems to be, but even with the single torx screw I can see removed, it doesn't seem to want to shift.
