Recordable Blu Ray

I've never had a recordable DVD player but am now thinking of getting one as I'll soon be changing the SKY+ box and there are a few things on there that I'd like to burn to disc.

Seems as though I may as well buy a recordable blu-ray though and upgrade at the same time. However, it comes with a built in HDD and digital tuners and all sorts of other sh1te that I don't need and won't use. All I want to do is use it as a player for DVD's / Blu Ray discs and burn things to disc from the SKY+ box now and again.

Will this do the job.......? Blu Ray Recorder

I was actually thinking about the 850 version (bigger hard disk) as I am fed up with my HD box keep crashing, and paying Sky £18 a month for the ability to watch mostly free to air TV, and the ability to record.

I'd also be interested in what people's view is of this! +++

Can you actually transfer media from a Sky box to an external source, e.g. BD?

I don't know if this applies, but if a Sky subscription expires then it's my understanding that you lose the ability to watch anything recorded to the drive. Your subscription is a licence to view what you've recorded. Once that licence is gone, you can't view anything.

No, unfortunately not. You can only make a backup copy of the disk. The resulting backup is then only usable in Sky+ i.e. not your PC or DVD.

Due to the NDS encryption being still being present on the raw data stream as recorded by Sky+ you can not use any software to transfer directly to DVD or a PC - You MUST always use the Sky+ system to play-out the recordings, as it is the only device which can remove the encryption using your viewing card.

Don't know anything about Sky or Sky+ as I don't have them.

I do however have a Panasonic DMR850 HDD with Bluray recorder.

Good device plays bluray very well and works well if you have a Panasonic plasma/lcd. Programs must be recorded to HDD first and then can be transferred to bluray disc whic can be played on other bluray players.

500gb gives over 210 hours at highest quality.

Gripes - unit takes quite a while to start up compared to a normal DVD other than that no much else to say.
