IceBlue8
...about your fuel consumption! And value. I've seen a really nice S8 and I'm very tempted. But the average fuel consumption readout on the trip computer was 15.8 MPG. My 2.8 (I know, I've heard all the gags!) has an overall average of 25.6, which is close to what the 'combined' figure is in the Audi brochures. The brochure figure for the 'combined' S8 consumption is a little over 20 MPG, which I could live with. But less than 16 MPG is a deal breaker. So, if you're not too 'enthusiaistic', what do you guys get as an average MPG (combined urban and motorway driving). Be honest please - no macho bragging! This will be my only car - not a second car for occasional use, so it needs to be reasonably practical. And finally, what would you expect to pay for a 2002, near mint example with less than 45K on the clock? No rear entertainment pack, heated rear seats, refurbished 20" wheels and brand new quality tyres all round. 12 months tax, full Audi service history and MOT, and 3 owners. Only faults I can find are centre wheel caps neeed replacing, needs new front carpet mats and a wiper blade. But, wow! Is an S8 a lot of fun or what! )
SINGH
Glad you liked the car and pleased I could find one for you, I would go for it myself as a D2 S8 with only 43k on it is very rare. The fuel consumption isn't one of the S8s strong points to be honest. Expect 24 MPG on a run, 17-18 around town. Of course, stuck in traffic 15MPG is possible however the biggest variable is the way you drive!
Reffro
Around town I've seen as low as 14mpg, but that was on 6 mile journeys from cold for a week, with lots of traffic. On a run, 75-80 mph I get about 23-25mpg. My trip computer is currently showing 21.2mpg average (Actual 20mpg) for the last 4-5000miles of driving. This has mostly been done on the A1, but also includes some town driving and quite a few back road blasts, drag strips etc, so is a fairly reliable indicator of what is achievable. The killer I find is any town driving, or driving where you can't keep a constant speed. Even A-roads, with a few junctions or tight corners to accelerate out of have an effect. I should add that my style of driving is fairly aggressive, I rarely comply with the National Speed limits on A-roads and Dual Carriageways, but I do religiously stick to the limits in towns and villages. So someone who is happy to do 60mph should obviously do slightly better than me.
sutherland
My average over tens of thousands of miles in more than one S8 is always 21-22 mpg. That's probably 50% country roads, 25% motorway and 25% city. I reckon the only way I'd get it down to 16mpg is if I drove flat out all day on an autobahn. Suki Singh
I've had mine for a few months now and it's used as a second car, averaging about 15mpg, on a motorway run it was about 21mpg Mega machine, but i could not afford it as my daily drive (Ford Focus TDCI 50+mpg) Would recommend the S8

Made an offer, but he's sticking out for the asking price so, subject to an independent report, that's what I'm going to pay. If I drive carefully (is that possible in an S8?) I can live with 20MPG overall and, as I said to the missus, I don't play golf, go to football or spend nights in the pub with the boys (well, not often). And a man needs a hobby! Hope Tony can organise the next meet so it doesn't clash with my holidays so I can show it off! )

ainarssems
My 1997 S8 is doing 25-30 mpg on a motorway with gentle driving, short runs around the town 14-15mpg, with a heavy foot dips to 8mpg, average for me is 15-16mpg mostly town driving and short runs. IT_S8
20 / 21 is a common average amongst D2 S8's given a mix of motorway / town and a bit of fun. Expect 4-5mpg less on LPG. Expect about 4-5 mpg higher on a D2 4.2 A8. Fuel is flippin pricey no matter how you look at it, so might as well enjoy it... go buy the S8, you'll love it
SonicMarmalade
Fatty the 2nd is a 1998 340BHP S8 and cost me £2600. It manages about 15mpg, and I've done a fair amount of dual carriageway and motorway driving since I got it (probably half to a third of the miles of each tank full). My old 4.2Q did a fraction better so its a fair figure. Don't forget they need super unleaded as well. Question you have to ask yourself - is the bad fuel economy outweighed by the huge increase in power? I came from V6 Omega's which were a bit quicker than the 2.8 A8's, and the difference is just jaw dropping. The first time you properly give it the beans pulling onto a dual carriageway, you'll accept whatever real world problems it has. I'd be careful what you pay, because they are coming down fast, and the ones at premium prices aren't selling - its a good car, but its not worth literally double what an equivalent 4.2Q is. topgolfer1
Hi Iceblue, I was in the same situation as you,ie,going from a 2.8 to a S8,but mine is really a hobby car as I commute to work on a pushbike. Fuel connsumptuion on mine is about 16mpg,mainly round town, been on one 200 mile motorway journey when I picked her up and that averaged 24mpg. I was very happy with the 2.8,and even thought about keeping it and own both, but the S8 is so so so much better in every way,I wouldnt drive the 2.8,if I had kept it, as the difference is unbelievable,6 months later still enjoying every aspect of ownership. Best of luck if you decide to purchase
Daz.g
Hi, I do a mix of 'B' road and town driving with no motorways. I did an 'economy' run a while back and got 22.8mpg. When driving 'normally' ( and my normally means having quite a bit of fun) on the same roads I averaged 20.6mpg. Considering how boring it was to drive the'economy' run I would have needed to see at least 27mpg for it to be worth it for me. I say expect 20mpg average and drive it like you wanna.... You won't be disapointed.......
Simon8
Mostly used as a 'town car' my s8/32v sits around 17mpg - but I'd guess low 20's are achievable with a lot of motorway travel and gentle driving.
