RRH685
I've had intermittent warning lights re the parking brake for a couple of weeks, but haven't taken a lot of notice. It just sounded like the motors weren't working at the same time. I've gone out to it this morning, tried to disengage the parking brake- nothing. No motor noise or anything. Any ideas? Thanks muchly Simon
Wizbit
Have you tried just driving forwards? This should automatically release the parking brake. Its used for hill starts etc
PsYcHe
Mine stopped doing the auto-release after a firmware update. If they're stuck on, they're a PITA! Mine did it during the winter. I popped the wheel off, disconnected the connectors, give a vigorous spraying with WD40, put it back together and all was well. Only other option is to dismantle the brake caliper, etc and manually wind it in.
RRH685
They're not auto-releasing unfortunately. I have my friendly audi tech bloke coming to sort it tomorrow- unless I can do it with vag-com? Thanks for your help chaps
sloss
Did you get a satisfactory outcome on this problem? I've noticed a few times when I lock the car from the door button that the parking brake seems to cycle through a few on and offs. Not the same door button and not every time. I mentioned it to Audi but they found nothing in the Faults and their Tech had never heard of this happening. Am I in uncharted waters? Wizbit
Mine has in the past continued to whir away after locking the car. I had to get back in and release it and then re-engage it on one occasion. Only happened a handful of times, but your not the only one.
PsYcHe
They all seem to do it.. Sometimes it's on for just a quick burst, other times it cycles. Not sure if it's a self test feature or not.
untruenorth
Mine does it too - is it perhaps self-adjustment, rather than self-test? It seems like it winds all the way off, then all the way on, then backs off a bit. I wonder if that would take account of pad wear, and always ensure that the amount of time taken to wind on the "handbrake" is within acceptable bounds. I wonder also if there are benefits from winding back and forth - less risk of seizing up, that sort of thing. Of course: I'm theorising from a position of bugger-all knowledge. I've had calipers in bits, but not *these* calipers. Might well be talking bozwellocks.
RichardW
I used to leave my parking brake off - car on flat driveway and transmission lock stops it moving anyway. But the I noticed that most times, shortly after I parked the car I would hear the parking brake motors cycling (as described above) several times. I was concerned that this could, perhaps, shorten the life of the motors and started to always park the car with the parking brake selected. Not sure if this is good or bad practice but, so far, no problems (53 plate D3 4.0TDi but with only 53K which I have owned since May 06).
RRH685
My local friendly Audi man came and wound the rear calipers off, and found that there was nothing left of the rear pads. I've ordered disks and pads and they're being fitted this week. I'm told the rear brake motors rarely fail... but the handbrake ECU's can be a problem- I'm hoping the disks / pads sort it, and that it had gone in to some sort of 'safety' mode, but suspect it will need an ecu. Axeboy
Mine just started having issues with the P.brake tonight. One side seems to work fine but the passenger side keeps making noises then just doesnt lock on... Will take the wheel off tomorrow and give it a good clean, hopefully help
sloss
They all seem to do it.. Sometimes it's on for just a quick burst, other times it cycles. Not sure if it's a self test feature or not. I'm reassured now I know others have had this 'cycling' syndrome. As I said before the Audi Tech in Aberdoom had never heard of it.... that's worrying though! Still on warranty for another year anyway!
Axeboy
Ahh well... changed the back pads on mine, still making a grinding noise. Comes up with the fault codes etc, so it must be the motor Still under warranty for a few months so will have to book it in
RRH685
The pads and disks were changed on mine last night. We still have problems, so having the handbrake ECU done next week.
sloss
Try this: Stop the engine, put the parking brake on then off. Get out and lock the car using the offside rear door button. It then cycles the brake a few times. I can make it do that about 80% of tries. Stew,
PsYcHe
Do you have the fault codes it generates? I assume the calibration process was followed when the pads were changed?
Axeboy
My error code was something like "rear passenger caliper motor failure" or something like that... When the pads were changed that one side failed to calibrate or something. I remember them using the computer to move the pads in or something and one worked fine, the other danced around various numbers but never reached 0. Got a price of £165 for the motor or £465 for the caliper and motor.. should be under warranty, but Evans Halshaw are playing the game with me... we'll see how long they last
tonukkid
The handbook says that from time to time there will be noises from the parking brake system, and this is normal. I guess that it has to monitor itsself, otherwise cooling components could release the brakes, a la Citroen and others
A8 Doc
Happenned to my older D3. Required the ECU and the caliper according to Audi. These days I am not so sure.... New D3 (Same age ironically) always winds on it one? Calipers look fairly newish though.

Still on warranty for another year anyway! does not surprise me, every time mine went into ABZ it has come out with more faults then it went in with, not sure they know one end of an A8 to the other. I've switched to Perth.
Axeboy
Got my car returned fixed today (by Owen Ferry Auto) Turned out to be the motor on one side. Seems it has a little belt inside it and was gubbed

untruenorth
Axeboy, did you have to get the entire motor replaced, or do they do just the belt? I've just had the dashboard light up like a christmas tree due to a parking brake problem, ironic given my recent contribution to this very thread. Thought I wasn't going to leave the office last week although, eventually, the brake disengaged. Haven't used it since in fear...
