A5 3.0 Tdi

Just curious to get some feedback/thoughts on the 3.0TDi. I was originally intending to get an S5 cab, then read some of the horror stories about engine reliability and fuel economy etc. So thought I would get an equal spec 3.2 to what I have now. Then I was looking at the MPG/C02 ratings for the 3.0TDi and thought why not get a quote on this instead.

Pricewise the cost of the 3.2 versus the 3.0TDi is almost the same and I am now seriously considering jumping to the dark side and looking at a diesel cab. Never thought I would do so but I have heard good reports about the 3.0TDi and I wanted to get your input here.

So if you have a 3.0TDi A5 etc what MPG are you getting, how smooth/quiet is this particular engine and if you switched from a petrol equivalent did you regret the move or was it simply the best move you made.

I have never really considered a diesel cab before, so any feedback here would be welcome, thanks guys :)

3.0TDI Coupe not Cab here. Getting lates 30s MPG, super smooth, no clatter (in the Coupe at least) and torque in spades. Absolutely no regrets, the best real world A5 (Coupe). The only thing I cannot comment on is in the Cab (with say hood down). Oh look at residuals as well. 3.2 petrol may well be dead in the water (though super rare in Coupe form which may help a bit).

I had two test drives in an A5 3.0tdi...the first of which was for approximately 1.5hrs...I live on Anglesey so was able to give it a little something....First impression....It`s a fabulous engine.Refined...Super smooth and it`s endowed with Starship Enterprise like torque.

The only negative is that like all diesels it tops out at 4,500rpm(I think)....you just want too rev the thing....but of course it`s all about riding that monster wave of torque....which is no bad thing really.....I made a point of the checking the mpg(DIS) after the drive....Covered 75miles...33mpg...but the test car was brand new and only had 9miles on the clock when I picked it up.

However if you check out the A5 OC forum there`s a thread dedicated to mpg....It seems Audi`s official mpg are very optimistic to say the least....but I would`t let that put you off...I was on the verge of ordering one until I test drove a Jag XF.

The A5 3.0tdi is a great car with a fab engine and I very much doubt you`ll regret buying one

Audi A5/S5 Owners Club - A5_OC

ps....forgot to add....always driven petrol cars( apart from my beloved Defender)....As I said; I`ve ordered an XF which also has a 3.0 tdi engine.....Both engines are super smooth and virtually no engine noise permeates the interior....especially in the Jag......It almost kills me to say it....but with engines like these, large capacity petrol engines will soon become an endangered species.......Except in dedicated sports cars of course.

I've had my 3.0TDI Cab for about 3 months now and am very happy with it. Very little in the way of diesel clatter plenty quick enough with all that torque and mid thirties mpg in mixed mainly 'speedy' motoring. DCT gearbox v smooth changing, don't really bother with the 'flappy paddles'.
