A8 D3 Battery Regulator / Energy Management ECU issues

Just purchased a replacement battery for mine. It was whinging it only had 10% left. £86 for a Bosch.

I had to 'manually code' the new battery and it's now reading at 100%. The measuring blocks are also reading 100% instead of the 10% before. The battery had dropped 10% since March, so was defo on it's way out and whinged almost everytime I started it.

Bit of a revival for me comming back here, I got rid of my A8 D3 about 6months after sorting out the issues with the authorisation module / battery issue. I bought a Civic Type R and that lasted about 6months before I got bored and wanted to go back to something luxurious.

I bought a 2001 Lexus LS430 and have now had it 2 years, apart from a problem with the windows delaminating on two panes of glass ( which I replaced by buying the glass off someone on ebay ) this car has been faultless. It has more goodies than my A8 4.2 LWB ever had, my A8 didn't even have auto lights? but it had keyless entry / start?

My LS430 is quieter, smoother, better seats - everything bar the looks of the car blow the A8 out of the window.

I loved the audi until I drove this lexus and then I realised that it just blew the audi out of the window in every dept, The audi I had done 93,000 miles when I bought it and 101,000 when I got rid of it and in the space of less than 2 years of owning it. It cost in excess of £1,800 in electrical problems ( £950 which was covered by a warranty )

I love the fact that in my lexus I can leave it for a few weeks and it won't drop on the suspension like the audi's / merc s classes do.

The chap above who said he replaced his battery and it's now showing 100% If I were you I would give it a few weeks and you will see that will go down as the exact same thing happened to mine. I swapped it out for a new battery and even when it was coded correctly after all the cock ups it still would go down on the meter. These A8's just don't like to be sat around for much time at all

Glad you are happy with the Lexus. They are well known for being faultless! (but ugly)

Does the Lexus go as well, handle as well?

My A8 is my daily, and in my hands over 6 months has racked up over 12K miles.

PS - I hate auto-lights, I am quite capable of stretching my arm to turn them on myself when it gets dark :P

They are not all like that! I have had my A8 4.0 TDI for over 7 years and it will be 10 years old in October. It still has the original battery and starts normally when standing for over 2 weeks. After over 3 weeks it will have deactivated keyless entry ( as it should ) to protect battery but still unlocks on the remote. It did have the battery management upgrade early in its life recorded in the Service Book.

Overall a reliable car; had a gearbox fluid change to the "blue fluid" and associated reprogram of the gearbox ECU to cure a "thump" as the box changed into 2nd gear when coming to a stop. About 3 years ago it went into limp mode.I checked with vagcom/VCDS and it showed an implausible boost pressure reading - cured by simply clearing the fault code.

There are alot of high mileage D3 A8s around. I guess we only hear about the cars that have problems.

Yes, I like the GS450h on paper and for value for money - but went to see one and it just had such a low-rent previous generation Hyundai/Kiaesque interior. I hope that in the future they can sort out the sumptuousness and elegance without sacrificing everything else and I will buy one. Not even that bothered if it's uglyish.

The point about the auto lights is that a car that cost in excess of 60k when new should have auto lights as standard, my lexus is 2 years older than the A8 I had and again the kit it has blows the audi out of the window.

( soft close doors, rear electric seats with massage function, suede headlining, auto lights, climate control with center vents that move! :) awesome to see this in action, air cooled front seats the list goes on and on.

The engine is more refinded than the audi, my audi was 330bhp standard on the 4.2? and yet my LS430 which is around 290bhp standard is about the same 0-60 and will do 155mph limited. Again these cars aren't made to be cained, there built to drive around like you are a russian gangster lol.

Regarding the chap who said his A8 has been fine for 10 years on the same battery I highly doubt that mate, their is hundreds of people on the net who have the battery drain issue on the A8. When mine had the problems and they sorted it all out with the coding and new software etc it was still bollocks for going down within 2 weeks.

I loved the audi for the looks, but I didn't like it for the stuff that could and did go wrong.

When I first test drove a LS430 I didn't realise the car was already running and clicked the ignition and then thats when i knew it was running, these cars are so damn quiet it's unreal and has to be seen to be appreciated :D

There are a couple of people on this post saying that a new genuine audi battery fixes the battery drain issues at least for them.

I had my battery replaced with non genuine back in 2012. It was coded but have sometimes have slow long cranking issues.

Scanned car this morning and found these codes. This is after charging the battery over night. These faults were present before charging.

The dates on those codes are old.  Probably pre-new battery?

If you change the coding on the battery in the 61 regulator bit, it might register as OK again.

Mine was whinging at start-up and was sitting at 10% battery - until I changed the serial number by 1 digit.  Then (and now) it is sitting at 100%.

That was 2 months ago.
