Andy_Bangle
The distinguishing features of the hot hatch are lowered suspension, alloy wheels of large diameter, the rear wing and dual exhaust. The Audi S1 will officially debut during the 2011 and like other hot hatch Group - Volkswagen Polo GTI , Seat Ibiza Cupra and Skoda Fabia RS - will be equipped with the 1.4 TSI engine from 180 hp, matched with the S tronic gearbox to 7 relations. garcon magnifique
I'm sure it'll be popular with Audiphiles, but I can't help thinking anyone with a drop of petrol in their veins would choose an Abarth 500 instead.

Sparky
It's the S i want to buy for the wife, but I must admit that i find that a little underwhelming. I doubt that will be the final S1. Where are the usual S traits of silver mirrors? I bet there's still a few bits they'll change. I happen to think it's quiet nice actually, but may not be the best colour they've shown it in. I've seen a white one, in S-line guise that looked a lot more aggressive than that.

Presumably chrome mirrors removed to help the disguise. Agree about the colour but I dont think red suits much of the Audi range IMHO.
DanG
In red and with those wheels it looks very Alfa.... which does nothing for me. As i see more of the 500's going around, particulalry in white with the soft top, I am drawn more and more towards them.... although the Audi wont break down or rust through in weeks of course..... Tipex
The Audi might not rust, but it'll definately break down, coil packs will go all the time and you'll need VAG-Com just to change the fecking brake pads.
PetrolDave
coil packs will go all the time I've owned petrol Audis since 2000 (8L S3, 2 x B6 S4 and B7 RS4) and have yet to have a coil pack fail.
Tipex
I'd say you are in a lucky minority of VAG product owners then, either that or do very low mileage! Even my mums Polo, which hardly ever goes anywhere, has had the coil packs changed a couple of times!
PetrolDave
I'd say you are in a lucky minority of VAG product owners then, either that or do very low mileage! I average about 12,000 miles per year. Plus my wife has had a Skoda Fabia since 2005 which has now done nearly 30,000 miles and we've had no coilpack failures on that either. So between us we've done just under 850,000 cylinders x miles (S3 = 4 years x 4 cylinders x 12,000 miles, S4/RS4 = 6 years x 8 cylinders x 12,000 miles, Fabia = 3 cylinders x 25,000 miles) without a coilpack failure. I don't think that makes them an unreliable component.
garcon magnifique
Out of interest, how many failures of any kind have you had with those cars? I've done roughly 160k in 7 Subarus (all but two of them going over the 30k mark) with nothing more than 3 minor recalls and a wheel alignment feck up to show for it. No failures at all. PetrolDave
Out of interest, how many failures of any kind have you had with those cars? S3 - ESP yaw sensor failed, replaced under warranty. - hazard warning light switch failed, replaced under warranty. First B6 S4 - delivered with faulty TV tuner, replaced under warranty (eventually!). Second B6 S4 - none. B7 RS4 - offside auxiliary radiator, just outside 3 year warranty. - front shock absorbers and DRC valve, replaced under DRC warranty. Fabia - wires to reversing light switch too short (known problem), replaced when they snapped after 3 years.
garcon magnifique
Not too bad given the miles. Even given Subaru's bullet proof reputation I feel I've been lucky. In fact, just remembered one failure, and it was a European component - the 6cd stacker in my first Legacy swallowed 6 cds (that I never saw again!) and refused to do anything but make excrutiating grinding noises. Replaced under warranty. I suppose the thing is, those of us who tend to buy new/nearly new cars and move them on before they've got much beyond 30k miles seldom really test the reliability limits of those cars. It's a different story when I look back to the older/cheaper stuff I've had, although I do have a soft spot for a Nissan Maxima 3.0 I took from 130k to 160k with no issues before an expired auto 'box forced me to get rid. cruiser647
I've bought numerous high mileage Audis, (an 8, 6, 6 and another 6), and kept them for quite a while. Wifey using the last 2 6's for very short journeys with the kids. None of which have had Coil Pack failures. None of the paperwork I've got has suggested they been replaced - but then again?!? Who knows! Mr G - You had a Maxima?
cruiser647
Back on topic - I don't tlike the A1/S1. The back of it looks wierd and out of proportion. (IMO)
garcon magnifique
Mr G - You had a Maxima? I did, old square shape 1994 3.0 SE (sadly not the SEL), in gorgeous maroon. Bought for pennies to do the miles and park in the arse end of Glasgow for a contract. Not the best car I've ever had, but probably the best value!
