micalee
Have been admiring the W12 for some time now and would love to have one. But having read a review saying the 4.2 was the better option, I am after some more advice. What are the pro's and cons of the W12. Would the 4.2 be better, diesel or petrol. I suppose the W12 appeals due to the luxury it offers, the power is certainly nice, but I am sure the 4.2 would be sufficient enough. Has anyone owned one? craigyb
I had one for nearly 2 years, great car, if you can live with 15mpg then yes go for it. The S8 has better MPG at 21's but the W12 is so smooth and refined compared to the S8.
PsYcHe
W12 is an awesome engine.. But the 4.2 is plenty fast. If you can, get the 4.2 diesel and have it remapped, will be even faster than the 4.2 petrol and more economical.
w12oilyrag
I get about 18mpg towing my caravan and about 21mpg around town and the best of 28 mpg on a long run across europe.
craigyb
I find that hard to believe based on the official figures which are always optimistic. FUEL CONSUMPTION: (urban)13.8mpg / (extra urban) 28.5mpg / (combined) 20.5mpg
MICKPSU
I have a w12 and get approx 15-16mpg around town with no more than 21mpg on the motorway. Having said that I do boot it at every opportunity so with some frugal driving you will get an improvement but whats the point in having a w12 if the buying decision is based on economy. Servicing costs are not as dear as you may think. Mine is coming up for a 65K service at £345.00. It is chain driven so no scary cambelt changes but the spark plug replacement x 12 can hit the wallet. I have been trying to replace the w12 for approx 10 months but unable to find a car that can match it for refinement and effortless smooth performance at such good value. 70mph feels like 30mph, 155mph feels like 70mph and it hits 155 in approx 30 seconds, not bad for a limo. I have tried an Arnage BUT servicing costs are ballistic, Quattroporte's build quality isnt great, M5 is a BMW (enough said). Still trying to find a car worthy of its place on the driveway..... There is no other car in the Audi range than can match the rocket ship performance and limo luxury of the w12. Highly recommend a w12 if you can stomach the mpg, you will not be disapointed. If you want performance S8, for refinement, smoothness, power W12 and for economy A8 3.0Tdi. Humble owner of 4.2 V8 petrol amply enough for me unless i want to loose my license which is not what i desire. Juste mon avis, Aurevoir! W12
just sold my W12 and got 335d coupe- gotta say the W12 engine is amazing so quiet and refined with instant power it puts the 335d to shame however main reason i sold it was 10-12 mpg and 17-19 on the motorway!!! dont believe the manufacturer figures! - also believe it or not the build quality on the beemer i would say is better - no rattles or squeake in the cabin like i got in the w12.. mcobinad
HelloW12, I just sold my A8 D3 4.2 because i want to experience the famous W12 engine. I really love this car although the inside does not differ from my previous A8. But i want to experience the engine. How did you feel when you had it? What was the consumption like in the city and motor? I do less than 10,000 miles a year. The fact that you said rattles and squeake in your previous post is beginning to put me off. There is no car that attracts me other than the A8 flagship, an alternative is the mercedes CLS or R500L Sport model as i have two kids. But i had a wonderful experience with my 4.2 V8 except the electronic issues. I love power in a car but what is the resale value like? Am probably intending buying from Germany where i can still resale it after 2 to 3 years at a reasonable price compared to the UK where you sell it for a chicken change.
