AZURES3
Magazine cover said best Audi apart from the R8. Its a great car but not that good Audi A1 1.4 TFSI Sport - Autocar.co.uk
Dave
Agree, I would go as far as to say it is ground breaking in it's segment.. but to compare it to the R8 is a step too far!
garcon magnifique
If they think it's potentially the best in its segment (a segment that includes the MINI, er, the Aston Martin Cygnet and... er... ), then I don't suppose they're far off in saying it's the next best Audi to an R8. Because if you think about it, what they're simply saying is that the A3/4/5/6/7/8/Q5/7 are not the best in their segment. Which is true. None of them are anywhere near. AZURES3
Will have to see it out on the road properly - as I am in the same mind as you. Its better in real life, thought the same from the pictures but the trip to Germany and seeing it up close was much better. Red is the best colour with the silver contrast. maersk
Nope, ugly. A shrunken A3 and without the A3 attractions............... This was going to be my next car but......................... A Polo looks more attractive.................... And a lot cheaper
CarMad
I'm a bit perplexed by this I read the Autocar article and it wasn't rated highly and came 3rd in class. Am I missing something?

garcon magnifique
They're saying it's the best Audi, not the best car overall, as I understand it Because most other Audis, except arguably the R8, aren't even good enough to come 3rd in class. Yep, that's about right.
scillyisles
Clearly some people are wearing Audi tinted spectacles - drove one today. Nice cabin environment but some parts have clearly been value engineered.- reasonably nippy 1.4TFSI - ride quite firm and jiggly on 17" wheels and tyres. Quite a lot of road noise too. Steering very light (too light). Gearchange and other controls also quite light. Build quality seems good and the range of options available is as good as one a Mini but the price rockets up quite fast to eye watering levels where you can buy something much better. Ground breaking - I think not.
SINGH
Because most other Audis, except arguably the R8, aren't even good enough to come 3rd in class.Yep, that's about right. I'm sure the latest TT is considered best in class and the S4 has beaten the 335I in some reviews I've read to. I do understand what your saying though. I personally would go 3/5 series over the A4/6 and possibly XJ over the new A8. All of which I have experience of. The A1 that you drove Scillyisles, was it the standard one or the sport? I drove the standard one and also thought it drove really cr*p. I remember texting Dave on here who was in the A1 behind me in the German countryside with Azure and we agreed the sport one was much better. But I shared the exact same sentiments as you do about the non sprort, stupidly light steering etc...
scillyisles
The one I drove was a 1.4TFSI Sport and I found the steering very light (artificially light). After driving the A1, I then drove exactly the same route again in a 2011 Mini Cooper D and concluded that : - steering feel and controls feels are much better weighted in the Mini. There is no doubt that a Mini is a much better drivers car. - ride comfort was better in the Mini (Mini was on 16" wheels) This was a big surprise as the Mini is not known for a comfortable ride. - refinement was better in the Mini - again this was a big surprise but road/tyre noise was less in the Mini and engine sound was less in the Mini even though the Mini is a diesel ( the new BMW diesel engine in the Mini is very quiet when driving) - dashboard layout and controls are better in the Audi. - rear space is much better in the Audi. - boot space is much better in the Audi. Tipex
I saw one of these little Audi's for the first time today, it was in a horrendous shade of light blue which didn't help, but I didn't even realise what it was at first, I honestly thought I was following a Proton until I noticed the Audi badge! From a purely aesthetic view, I don't like it, but then it's not the sort of car I'd ever buy as A, I'm not a girl, and B, I don't need something to go to tesco in. JamesCB
I wouldn't say Autocar have been that complimentary about the A1. They've hardly been raving about it. Vicky Parrott wasn't too keen on the 1.6 TDI she drove, neither was however wrote their early test of the 1.4 TFSI. There haven't exactly been that much competition to be 'the best car since the R8'! scillyisles
Jeremy Clarkson did a review in this week's Sunday Times. I agreed with his points where he said it was not much fun to drive and when specced up was overpriced. In essence it is a VW Polo underneath but at a much more expensive price. Shame really as Audi do have the know how and resources necessary to produce a mould breaking new super mini but they ducked the challenge. garcon magnifique
There haven't exactly been that much competition to be 'the best car since the R8'! I think what they mean is it's possibly Audi's least sh*t car since the R8. Which it might be, but that says more about the others than it does the A1. No rose coloured "Audi" shades for you then Garcon, you seem to have the same appreciation for the Audi product, as I have for "Biffer" Cole............ I have driven the A1 and TBH not a bad little car in 1.4 TFSI format, and very price competitive in standard format, but if you are speccing one up, just buy a Golf instead, unless your badge means more than your wallet. Cuprabob
I had a look at one yesterday in my local dealer and was very impressed with the inside. The Mini is too funky for me. The exterior...let's just say it's not the prettiest but then again it was sitting next to a R8 Spyder :-) Pity you can't spec. across marques. I'll take a Polo with the Audi interior and the Skda price, thanks
