Battery charging via cigarette lighter socket

I have a 2001 S8 (D2).

Does anyone know whether it is possible to charge the battery through the cigarette lighter socket? I notice that Maplin are currently selling a solar powered trickle charger that could be connected in this way and it struck me that if it would work, this might be a good solution for keeping the battery charged up if I am away for a few weeks.

I wouldnt touch one of them with a barge pole you could quite easily damage something. Charge the battery directly and not through the Lighter socket.

As above I would give it a wide berth.

Also, if you did decide to go down that route it would only work if the 12V socket is live all the time as some only work with the ignition on.

I wouldn't have thought charging the battery through the cig lighter is a good idea either. Does the D2 also have a power management ECU (like the D3)? If so, it could cause all sorts of expensive issues.

Thanks for all of the comments. I was instinctively hesitant, but thought that I had read something on here in the past about someone recharging the battery via the lighter socket when they couldn't get into the boot becasue the battery was flat, and so thought that maybe it was OK.

There is no power management ECU in D2 and charging through cig lighter should not be a problem. I see no problem in using solar powered charger as long as it is designed properly and good quality.
