dave_v6
Can you help me. Ive got an intermittent misfire on my 2001 golf v6 4motion. It loses power, misfires and start making a 'tinking' sound. By tinking i mean quite a high pitched pinging, like someones tapping something. Sounds like its from inside engine. When the tinking noise occurs the misfires happens but sometimes it misfires without the noise. Garage thought it was just misfire, fixed it, then the noise came back. They have asked about and have suggested it may be a loose valve guide, so only way to pursue problem is to remove head and investigate. Any ideas? Its a 2001 2.8 v6 4motion, done 93,000 miles on a Y plate if that helps.
Cuprabob
First thing I would suspect with any VAG car that's misfiring is a faulty coilpack although that wouldn't cause the pinging you refer to.
TIDYDUBS
Have you any fault codes? Does the engine light come on at all? The timing chains do stretch on those im afraid but need to know if fault codes are present or have been please.
rs32
I would definitely look at coil packs and ignition leads - with the cold damp weather there could be some water ingress. A VAGCom scan would help pinpoint the problem. Often with coil packs if one goes then the rest can start playing up, it's not pleasant in terms of cost but I've known quite a few MkIV V6 4Mo and R32 owners having to replace the lot as a bundle to get the system to settle down properly.
