Spa F1 on family holiday?

I'm planning a family holiday in France this August, and would love to finish it off by going to Spa on the final weekend. I've never been to Spa, but a lot of the stories I hear and the people I know who have been, suggest that it's real party atmosphere, staying up all night drinking and partying etc.

That sounds great if it was just me and the lads, but what I'd like to know is, is there also anywhere family-friendly to stay nearby (camping, B&B, hotel, whatever) not too noisy or laddish? We've got two young girls, 6 and 8, and they would like to see a race, but I could do with getting them to sleep at night too!

So - any suggestions? Experiences (good or bad)?

What about looking into how far away a belgian centre parcs site is? Will keep everyone entertained if you pop out for a day and I'm sure if you sold it on the proviso of in swap for an afternoon on pampering/waterskiing/country walking (whatever other half likes) you'd be on to a winner :P

It's a pretty dull area, circuit aside, I think my kids (similar ages) would be bored rather quickly FWIW. I'll try and find the name of the Hotel we stayed in last year, that was pretty good, or maybe Mook/Tipex can remember ?

Think that Hotel (If I'm thinking of the right one!) will be top price on race weekend as it's so close to the track!

I did a Spa GP lads weekend in 2001 so not to sure where's good to stay for a family/kids type visit. As TSK said, there isn't much really overall at Spa itself, you'll need to stay in Francorchamps which is a fair size town so, restaurants, hotels, bars etc a plenty!

Welcome to TSN by the way! +++

Camping - no. Every campsite we've stayed at for the Belgian GP has either been full of Mika Hakkinen and Schumacher fans, having shouting competitions after 18 litres of beer until 3am, or Dutch fans, who just want to get pissed and high til 2am (which we enjoyed with them, but that's another story), but then ended up shagging each other until about 4am (blokes and girls, I'll add - as far as I remember, there wasn't any gay sex, although there might have been).

Hotels etc - yes, but you'll need a mortgage to pay the asking rates. Everywhere will be already booked up, but try Malmedy, there's some chalet parks down there. Hotel in Francorchamps is called Hotel Acqua Rossa - top of the hill. Fully booked out though.

If you're driving (as you probably will be) it normally takes 2 hours to get away from the circuit, so just bear that in mind, if you're making a mad dash for the ferry/tunnel after the race has finished.

Have fun though, whatever you decide to do.

Thanks for all the replies, really useful stuff. Centerparcs could be an option - there is one not too far away, and 2 weeks is close to the price of 1 week in a UK Centerparcs.

The other half is a F1 fan too, so she would be happy, but on reflection I don't think that the kids would cope, and I don't want to go to all that trouble and expense just to miss the race because the kids are bored and playing up. Oh well, they'll have moved out in another ten years! ;-)

If you wanted to go to Spa still on a non race day, a better time might be when theres a trackday on there.

Last year on the way back from the Ring/Hotel we stopped off at the track and was told to park just outside. Doing so and then just walked in and around the track whilst some nutters on bikes went round the track. We could go in the Stand on the straight and everywhere else we more or less wanted to.

Best part was it was free!!!
