Build date versus delivery date?

We had been given an estimated delivery date on my wifes X5 of the first week of March.

Today, after chasing, we have just been told it now has a build date of March 11th.

I am steaming - because from my recollection the delivery dates are usually anything between 3-6 weeks after build dates?

Please can someone tell me I am wrong, otherwise she is going to blow a gasket.

Precisely, and thats just the start of it.

Originally ordered 10-11 months ago but cancelled once we discovered the new model was due out in July.

Ordered on release of new model for delivery October - until they fecked the order up but actually admitted it.

Ordered in late October and in early December we were told delivery 1st March. Nothing more from them since so I chased it today. I've never asked about build date or anything else because we'd never heard anything different from 1st March for a long time now and had no reason to think differently.

What is pissing me off immensely is how can it be that we have a delivery date of 1st March yet when I chase it I'm told we have a build date that is 10 days beyond the given delivery date? What a crock of ****. I've told her and to be honest she's not too bothered, but it is really hacking me off. Maybe I should just start to be as relaxed as she is about it because no matter I say or do they seem determined to feck this up constantly. I'll put money on it being a lemon when it arrives.

No explanation at all when I asked the salesman - who wasn't my normal contact so he pleaded innocence and I'll have to wait for the other guy to ring me tomorrow. What they don't know is that right now I am considering just turned up at 9am and asking him face to face. Phone calls are just too soft for this kind of thing now.

MrsMe is telling me 'not to get worked up about it'.

3-4 weeks for European built car yes, but the X5 is built at Spartanburg so shipping maybe a little longer. If you've got the VIN call BMW customer services in Bracknall 0800 325 600 and try and get someone to tell you.

I didn't get that. Presumably the dealer would be able to tell me? I suspected as much about delivery time. My immediate thought was 4-6 weeks but I've done a bit of Googling elsewhere and I am getting more annoyed by the minute....when I am reading of 6-7 weeks after build date.

I ordered (new VW) in early October 2010 - to be told delivery would be 20 weeks or so.

This week I got an update that my Build Week was week 16.

In short, I'll have the car in late May, possibly early June 2011.

It's not just BMW !!

Maybe that's the issue- They see the purchase on the books as Mrs Co Car and as such 'just' another order. I'd have a chat with the sales bod and point out the human element of the sale.

Easter on it's way, planned to go on a family trip in the new motor (etc, etc, etc)- who knows you might get them crying for you and offering freebies in lue of the delivery date being 4rse up !

I think the lesson here is not to let it go so long before getting a confirmed build date.

The factories have build slots and allocate them out. The dealers sell any cars they can regardless of if they have an immediately available build slot. They then of course blame the manufacturer for the delay when if fact it's their fault for suggesting "it's normally 8-12 weeks" (or whatever the time frame). The "normal" time is irrelevant if they don't have a slot.

I gave my dealer two weeks to provide the build date and commissioning number (the only proof you can get). If they didn't then I'd have found a dealer with a slot .... or more likely the dealer would have bumped me up into someone elses slot who was maybe not so insistent. It's not right that it works like this but it does.

In your situation I'd get the commissioning number and call BMW customer services and ask when the order was placed and when the build slot was allocated. You'll then know for sure if it's genuine factory delays or the dealer playing you.

The are delays for some vehicles :

"Volkswagen will temporarily close one of its plants next week, as Germany’s major car producers struggle with a shortage of key components.

Both VW and rival BMW are enjoying a boom in demand for their vehicles in the US and China, but their suppliers of engines and other parts are struggling to keep pace."

which is from : German car giants struggle with parts shortage

HOLD THE FRONT PAGE :roflmao:

Brilliant, absolutely bloody brilliant in an incompetent sense.

THEM: "The staff member read the dates incorrectly. The cars build date was 2nd February. The date he gave you was the ADTC date."

ME: "What is ADTC?"

THEM: "Anticipated Date To Customer. The car will be ready for delivery on Friday 11th March 2011."

:roflmao:

I give in.:roflmao:

It's still 10 days late though isn't it? I hate to be cynical about dealers, but are you sure the 'mix up' wasn't a bit of expectation management. Imply it's going to be really late, then when it's just 10 days you're happy

Worth the wait though I'm sure - enjoy the new car +++

Nope.....because I asked them to send me proof.+++

I subsequently received a scan of a printed out document which I then, not being suspicious at all, got a graphic designer to check had not been photoshopped.:roflmao:

It has been a genuine cock up from the guy who wasn't handling the sale. You're right that it doesn't change the fact that it is 10 days late, but I'm not going to moan any further on the basis that we'd not followed up the delivery date for a long time anyway - and that I reallllly don't want to risk any more feck ups by making things even slightly complicated for them! :roflmao:
