MK4 Golf V5 - Engine cuts out when cold.

Bought a golf v5 2.3 tiptronic in october 2010 - 53' plate

Not long after purchase i started getting problems. Random cut outs, revs sometimes fluctuating. Booked it in to my local VW dealership - The cause they said was the o2 sensor both before and after the exhaust. Had it all replaced and all was fine....for a about a month. Start cutting out again/stalling , but would start again on second try and once after about 10 mins of driving the car would be fine it would always while it was 'cold' . However one day i had more serious problems, bunny hopping and then completely died and couldnt start it again. Had it toed to VW , who then said the problem was the MAF - Had that replaced, after that all was running perfectly again for a couple weeks..but now its started cutting out on me again and a lot of time not starting on first try, I have the get the revs up a bit so it gets going. This all occurs usually when cold it can cut out a few times till it warms up then it will drive fine.

Im obviously going to have to book it in again to VW , but does anyone have any ideas what else it could be?

Just to summarise the problems are

Engine cut outs/stalls when cold

Revs fluctuate slightly when cold.

Wont start when cold - will need to accelerate and get revs up for it to get going.

Normally cuts out when slowing down. But has cut out when driving at a constant speed.

New MAF and New o2 sensor already done by VW

92K on the clock

Possibly a duff Air Mass meter it has been known, the other thing if it was that you altitude correction would have been way out and they do take a while to re adapt back to normal but i would have thought they master tech would have carried out an extended road test to help alleviate the problem?

Possibly a temp sensor problem not always picked up by engine management. Or a throttle body poblem. Not all VW retailers run through a complete test of fault memories......hence there could be an under lying problem there in another control unit.

Keep us up to date on how you get on.

Thanks for your input TINYDUBS. it looks like

Another prob I'm going to have to pay for unfortunately my funds are really low so dont want to book it back till I know i can for any repairs.

As said once car is warm there is no problems at all- is safe to continue using it for a couple weeks or would it be best to leave it untill i can afford to get it looked at again ?

Funny you should have this issue.......

At about that time, there was a black V5 Tip for sale in P'bro which wifey and I were interested in for her. We went to see it, and drove it. Drove fine when cold and then wanted to stall all the time when warm. Turn the Climate off, and it was fine. Matey said he'd sort the issue.

We did not buy it and it disappeared, only to turn up again at another dealer in P'Bro for more cash the following month. I went to see it, and again it had the same issue. I idled it for a while until warm and then it continually tried to cut out, until the Climate was turned off.

The car sold before we could go for a drive, as it was having the rear brakes pads changed.

Never did get to the bottom of it. Only had 99K miles on it too.

Good luck!

thats interesting cruiser. I never thought about climate control. Went out this morning and kept it off and had no problems with it cutting out on me....going to keep trying with it off the next couple and see what happens and see if there is a pattern.

Well, it must of just been a coincidence about it being fine with the climate control off other day as its still doing it...and now getting the alternator workshop message displayed again. Its defitnley only when cold and normally when i come to slowing down , when the revs go down is when it cuts . Once its warm no problems at all. Really bugging me going to have it booked in yet again on Monday

  • 2 weeks later...

Just an update

VW had a look at it and was apparantly a fuse had blown, cant remember the name of the fuse ?! checked the worksheet and it just says fuse replaced? Anyway they didnt charge me anything which was good and so far no problems. However im going to see how it goes i really hope its sorted although im a bit sceptical as im unsure how a fuse could cause that problem and why wasnt it picked up in the first place.

well didnt last long, 3 days later same problems started juddering badly and EPC light and emissions light come on so took it straight back.

Apparantly the problem is now electrical brake vaccum pump and the temp sensor. They also mentioned other codes but they were the main problems and would check other other codes once those parts are fitted.

Quoted around £400

Go to a VAG independent.....

should of took your advice but dont know anyone reliable who is close to me. Got the work done by vw which cost approx £410 - next day same problem. Now its the throttle valve adapter , which they have decided because of all MY problems...nothing do with there work they wont charge me labour just for the parts, again this will cost me around £400. Does anyone know how long it takes to fit one of those and also a good place to possibly source the part myself?

absolute nightmare!

If there 'fix' didn't fix the problem, you should ask them why you have to pay for it.

Whereabouts in the world are you? There will be someone on here, who can recommend a VAG indy.

Have you searched the V5 Owners club forum? You don't have to be a member.

I asked that very question cruiser but they say the parts they have fitted were all needed! Also the different parts can all cause the same symptoms,

Hmmmm.

They weren't needed though.

I'd go somewhere else or ask them to get their Master Tech to look at it -without paying more money unless they actually fix it.
