Kwik Fit and a Free Oil Topup

Apologies if this is a bit long, stick with it, it could save you a few quid!

I've just been away with the family for a long weekend in Wookey Hole and on the way up we made a couple of stops at site of historical interest, when leaving one of them my Low Oil Warning light came on, oops :o

Anyway we were in the arse end of nowhere (Avebury - very nice) at 4.30 on a Friday afternoon and good ol VW have all these funny codes about what oils to use and if you're on a long life service it needs to be a particular oil which you apparently can't get in most garages.

Anyway we were driving back through Devises stopping at each petrol station with no luck when the wife spots a Kwik Fit, I did a little shudder but pulled in to ask if they had any in stock and if they could sell me a litre.

After talking very slowly and clearly to the guy behind the counter we established the correct brand of oil that they sold that matched the finicky requirements and he went off and found a litre of it (Mobil One I think it was). I asked how much for it and told me it was free.

I returned his stupid stare back at him and said, how much?

Free.

Ok.

He pointed to their price board and it had a list of prices for various checks and services and below them it said Oil top up, up to 1 litre. Free.

I'm pretty sure that it meant if I paid the £48 for the service/checkup it included up to 1 litre of oil but I wasn't going to continue arguing. He carefully measured it in 1/4 litre increments and eventually put the whole litre in said all done and waved me off.

So does anyone have any experience in here of this free oil service from Kwik Fit or did he just get it wrong? I reckon he saved me about £16! +++

Edit - Anyone going to Wookey Hole soon the new Witch they've got there is very nice. Definitely Hubba Bubba rather than Hubble Bubble +++

Free Mobil 1?

That's worth redirecting the filler tube into a bespoke oil collector. Pop there 8 times and I'll have enough for an oil change - that's £200 worth of Official Porsche Centre oil (not that I ever pay that...)

Had a little look on the internet and apparently it is a legitimate thing they do, but according to a lot of people when they're doing it they 'notice' things wrong with your car a lot of the time and basically upsell. Thankfully mines a reasonably new car with new rubber, brake pads and discs all round :)
