No wonder insurance costs are going through the roof: Client of mine has an 09 520d. His wife had a no fault accident and was contacted by Helphire (or one of those companies). A brand new 530d arrived at their house the next day and their car was taken away. Two weeks later their car is sitting in the repairer's yard waiting for an insurance assessor to come and look at it. The courtesy car is being billed to the at fault's insurance company at £110 per day!! What a joke!

A similar thing happened to a friend of mine. His older shape M3 went into BMW for an insurance repair and the dealer put him in touch with a company which in turn provided a brand spanking new M3 - I seem to recall he had it for 3 weeks. Now how much would that have cost?

Now how much would that have cost?

Painful if you're on the receiving end, indeed. However, there is another side to it. The guy has paid for an M3. He may be paying for it each month. 3 weeks is a about 75% of a month's payment, and could be substantial - but the default is for him to get a Micra or the like for those three weeks. So thanks to the person whose negligence caused the accident, he would be paying M3 money to drive round in a Micra.

I had that conversation with a broker some time ago, before this credit hire scam took off. Their client had taken my car off the road for a week or so; I asked them whether it was fair that I was paying for a new 530i but driving around in a Micra thanks to the negligence of their client. Trouble was, in those days there weren't any firms set up to provide this service.

So I have to say, the idea of providing a proper hire car in these circumstances is right, imho. Where there is a problem is that there is no effective control over the cost; the person hiring doesn't care, and the insurer is presented with the bill after the event (I assume). Seems the insurers need to grow a pair and make clear that they will not accept hire costs that they haven't approved up front, and query the estimates to get them down to something reasonable.

Everyones insurance has gone up, insurance companies have been trading at a loss, and now they've decided they don't want to rely on outside investments, so as a result, everyones insurance is rising.

The only exceptions are low risk groups (no longer includes women thanks to euro ruling), for example, my taxi insurance was £980 last year, I renewed it yesterday for £899 as cab drivers are a lower risk (99% of accidents involving taxis are not the cab drivers fault).

Although that might seem like an expensive policy, you have to remember it includes public liability etc for something like 10 million.

Jeezzzzz, most Taxi drivers around here cannot even master the English language, never mind the bloody Highway code, driving standards are absloutly shiteeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!

Around here the taxi drivers used to be top notch, but in the last ten years its gone well backwards, i got in one at the station who asked me for directions last week, he had no idea where i wanted to go - 6 miles from station which i think is innexcusable. Demographic has changed mind esp in last few years.
