By the way, I bought it for the AMG Aero 1's. I wouldn't have bought it otherwise, but the look has kind of grown on me. The guy put a fair bit of effort into creating the look so it seems a shame to 'fix' it up again. Plus it's a really sweet runner; the rat-look is like a disguise. Cosworth body kit. It's got Carat Duchatelet wheels on it now.

It's just such a rude look...

It looks like a heap of junk to me.

No offence.

It looks like a f*cking pile of sh1t to me.

Offence intended.

Someone has a new shape Beetle round our way, it's silver, and always clean and nicely polished, except the bonnet, which is rusty, and a tatty old roof rack stuffed with rotting old suitcases among other sh1t, and bits of mouldy old rope.

I just don't get it.

Rat look = Barry. Discuss.

Not quite Barry, but getting close. Seems to be old VWs mainly and they all look shite, or to be more precise, Tipex has got the description spot on :roflmao:

But I reckon the future is to join a forum, post pics of a shat car and then put an ad up trying to sell it.

Shame everyone thinks it'd be better off in a breakers yard :coffee:

The rat-look is something I hadn't heard of except on motorbikes until I picked up this 190E, which I bought because I wanted the AMG Aero 1's for an AMG project (also just taken out the Alpine / JVC / Sony ICE and also found it has a Clifford + tracker). Apparently it's big amongst the youth of today (YOT) and they do seem to like this one. The idea is that you make the car look as knackered and clapped out on the outside but very sweet mechanically. I was surprised to find that it really is mechanically sound and the performance is highly commendable for a 1.8. It feels like you're driving something out of Mad Max or Escape From New York, quite amusing really.

I guess I have seen others before, seriously tuned Beetles about 15 years ago at Bug Jam etc. when I was into Beetles, but wouldn't have called them rat-look back then. I beleive the look originated from the Hells Angels in the US, who used the term 'rat bikes' for bikes that they had stolen and sprayed matt black all over to prevent identification.

I think the YOT like the look because some people find it offensive; judging by the the response from this forum I'm guessing it is quite successful at that. Don't get upset if one pulls away from you at the lights one day; the YOT are not idiots and these cars seem to be the result of 30 minutes with a black spraycan, 6 months with a set of spanners and a half decent budget.
