podgorny
Hi all, as the above title says I am thinking of buying one of these. I currently have a 2.8 V6 Quattro which I've owned for nearly 5 years and it's never missed a beat. After having owned that I'd find it very difficult to buy another car (5 series etc). However it's now done 186K and as an '00 is starting to show it's age. So a few questions. Does the 3.0 TDi have a timing belt or chain? If it is a belt, how many millions did it cost when you needed it changed and what is the interval. I had the belt on my current car changed by the local garage who had it 3 days and I think I paid around £600. Is there anything I should look out for in particular when buying one? Any achilles heel on the 3.0? Any particular model or gearbox to seek/avoid? I have been looking on Autotrader and they're quite rare in comparison to other cars in that class. For the money I have I'll be looking at 04-55 probably. Any other advice? Cheers.
Cockney Boy
The A6 4F V6 has a chain and not a belt. The 3.0 is very good and the gearbox's are fairly bomb proof, but like with any car you never know. If you buy an Avant, make sure that the hose for the rear wash wiper has been changed as they tend to break at the hinge.
avantissimo
Im on my fourth A6 now, and the one previous to this was a 3.0litre TDi quattro s-line lemans quattro Avant. This was an absolutely terrific car. The engine is extremely refined with monster torque and monster grip to match what with the STD quattro four wheel drive. The tiptronic gearbox is so precise and always seemed to perfectly select the right gear. Put it in sport mode and the throttle sharpens up and acceleration is quicker still. A really lovely car. Oh did I mention the torque and grip? I changed mine last year for another A6 but this time the 3.0litre petrol TFSI Supercharged version. This too is a fantastic car what with really rapid acceleration and silky smooth v6 enfine. Economy is lousy however ( try a combined 21mpg since new). As good as this engine is in this car, I'm going back to the v6 diesel again next time as it offers really good performance, economy and did I mention torque? Hope this is helpful. 944Turbo
I've had mine from 52,000 at 3 years old and just clicked over 153,00.00 including some high speed running in Germany. faults in that time - I have a cracked pipe for the rear wash wipe, an occasional heater issue (drivers side goes full hot) which I think I have tracked down to the actuator in the scuttle. On a motorway run will get into the low 40's mpg on a high speed autobahn run low to mid 30's. Got through several sets of tyres and used 2 sets of rear pads 1 set discs 1 set front pads and discs in that time. Mine is an S-line and manual - wanted a manual as I prefer them. Routine long life servicing at around 20,000 to 21,000 miles. Steering is (and always has been) a bit lacking in feedback, but otherwise excellent, amazing fun in a frozen car park last year - sliding so far sideways it was almost going backwards. Great for covering lots of ground. Ton
