jmarsden0
jmarsden0, my claim has been thrown out by VW for the same reason, I too have been given the customer care number but haven't got round to calling it yet.Maybe if enough claims are being turned down for the same reason, could you say it was a design fault and VW should at lease put something towards the cost as a goodwill gesture? My Gti has done 63k, but I'd be interested to know, if you can get any extra information out of anybody who had this problem fixed under warrenty. I need to get back to them to ask why they lied about not covering cars over 5 years old and why they are operating double standards. I had hoped that I would hear of lots of people having got it done completely free, but I've only found one. I'm not letting this one drop, so they have one chance to make things right. If not, I will get the work done (£217 quoted), and pursue VW via the small claims court whilst involving the likes of pistonheads and honest john et al throughout the process. Getting VW in the media spotlight might force them into being fairer about how they decide whether or not to repair a car. One thing to be careful about - if you leave it too long pursuing VW, that £217 repair will become more like £1,000 for a new tailgate as the rust keeps spreading
pingpongpo
I think if you have had your car serviced by VW (although it shouldn't matter) they don't like it as they should do a thorough body check on each service to check for any signs of rust etc.
ahankins
My 06 R32 had about 40k on it when inspected by my dealer. It helped that I had full support of the bodyshop guy at my dealer. VW came back once and quickly approved the repair once the dealer confirmed the damage wasn't caused by use. When cut open the corrosion was through both skins. Water clearly pools underneath the handle. I'd be surprised if this fault can be repaired around the lid, there's too much shape in the pressed area.

Tipex
Christ, if the mk5's are rusting already, imagine how bad the mk6's are going to be, what with all VW's cost cutting, and the fact they don't even paint the bits you can't see any more! Mook
It's a known and acknowledged issue Tipex. Water collects under the handle. Like that Ford of yours is perfect
Tipex
It's a known and acknowledged issue Tipex. Water collects under the handle.Like that Ford of yours is perfect It's not perfect by any means, I could list several things that are either poorly designed, or could be better quality, but it hasn't got any rust on it, and especially considering the mileage I do, it's been very reliable, the most reliable car I've ever owned in fact. Have you seen the posts from mk6 Golf owners showing how parts of the car you can see if you look properly, panel gaps etc, aren't painted? surely that can only mean it's going to more prone to rust than the mk5? jediknight83
Hmm.... Well that was unproductive!!! They flat out refused to deal with it... took one look and said its 'seam and crease' which is only dealt with under the 3 yr warranty!? From what I have read though lot of people have in fact had these bits done under the 12yr warranty though?
Tipex
Surely rust is rust, and doesn't matter how it's caused, so long as it's not from accident damage, and that a 12 year anti corrosion warranty, should mean exactly that. It's not your fault the handle pools water, and VW should be sorting it out, disgusting.
jediknight83
And just completely fobbed off by customer services saying i have to take it back to the retailer for a specialist to look at it... but the specialist they are talking about is the girl i saw who looks after paint warranty for Vindis VW in cambridge Bit surprised... I had an issue on my old S3 and Audi bent over backwards to fix it FOC
Mook
Try another dealer. My brother used to deal with Vindis VW and by all accounts they're completely toss.
jediknight83
Its all flipping vindis around here and in surrounding towns. Would mean going pretty far away but worth a try. Its just annoying as a quick google on 'golf gti rust' and loads comes up and its the same places and some get repaired under warranty so why some and not others. jediknight83
Dealers saying no and customers just accepting it. Yes... but now I'm just trying to work out from which angle I can go back to them and who do i go back to if i've been flat refused by Vindis Cambridge and fobbed off by customer services. ahankins
Inchape Chelmsford. Paul Canham is the bodyshop guy who deals with warranty. If it's legit he'll support it. However, how far that extends to cars maintained elsewhere remains to be seen.
Tipex
Yes... but now I'm just trying to work out from which angle I can go back to them and who do i go back to if i've been flat refused by Vindis Cambridge and fobbed off by customer services. I would go straight back to the dealer and tell them VW customer services told you to come back, and that you aren't happy with their initial response, rust is rust and you want it fixed under the terms of the anti corrosion warranty, be firm, don't take no for an answer, ask to speak to the manager if she doesn't play ball. Also tell them that you know it's a common problem and other people have had it fixed under warranty.
ivor2
I think an awful lot depends on the dealers attitude. In the current economic climate you would think they would welcome some warranty £. When my wife had her mk5 several years ago the dealer we went to would check the rear and badge area ,saying it was a known problem area ,thankfully ours was ok.As far as wax sealer goes check out how some of the mk2 s and last mk1 s were sealed up . I have bilthammer wax sealer on my mk1 and mk2 , makes a difference . My Mk1 had additional sealer from new back in 1982 i had it repainted last year and the rust spots round it were minimal for a 29 year old girl. silentandy
Random thread resurrection for anyone searching on this subject. I just had a wing replaced and hatch handle repaired under VW warranty due to rust. No issues or arguments, they checked car over and agreed. Just wouldn't do the other wing as it had already had a minor repair from a scrape I had which is fair enough. 7 year old car that was an import. RedRobin
VW have at last acknowledged that there is a rust problem on wings. It is brought about by foam pads being fitted on the Mk5 diesel Golfs in order to help deaden sound. However, these pads absorb moisture which in turn promotes/encourages rust. The wings are common to petrol versions of The Golf. If anyone wants a Volkswagen PDF (it's an internal document I have got hold of) on the subject as backup, then email me 'redrobinmusic @ dsl . pipex . com' and I will email it to you. Most VW dealers are now up to speed with this problem. It's not a recall and it's not a warranty issue. Howver, if you car has already had paint applied aftermarket to the wings, it won't qualify for free repair. Age doesn't matter. This was mine....
