New to here all but thought i'd join in.

Currently 43 year old, 6ft tall and 16 stone 3 pounds after a cruise we went on 2 weeks ago.

Just got back from the gym and a spin session with a difference, the instructor put us through a 20km race today which was mapped out with a good mixture of hills thrown in for good measure!!! it was a killer, managed 45 minutes and came in 4th out of 25 well behind (5 minutes) the young wipper snappers LOL

The wife came along and managed 57 minutes which was really good as she is due a big op next friday so should be in good shape hopefully for a good recovery period.

Never seen as many red faces !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at the end.

Thought id check back in for what seems to be a monthly update. lost about 2 pounds if that but belly has shrunk and waist is about an inch and a half smaller than when i started which is ace.

Played about with the current routine a bit to get more time in the gym.

Mon - 8am to 8:45am Weights > 12:30pm to 1:15pm Cardio

Tue - 8am to 8:45am Cardio

Wed - 8am to 8:45am Weights > 12:30pm to 1:15pm Cardio

Thu - 8am to 8:45am Cardio

Only works out about 4.5 hours on average a week so might go in for carido on a Friday morning as well soon. I have just been building up my stamina gradually and have noticed a good change in health and general energy levels once my body finally recovers over the weekend. +++

Mate that looks like plenty of cardio to me, I wouldn't up it more than 4 days a week. Bear in mind resistance training (weights burn off a shed load of calories (energy). Make sure your diet is in check and you have plenty of rest. It's a slow gradual process but better than dropping weight to fast, the quicker it comes off the quicker it will go back on. Ask yourself if in a year or two time can you see yourself doing 5 cardio sessions a week on top of 2 weight sessions.

Imho 2 weight sessions (if your not looking for maximum muscle growth, and 3 cardio sessions per week is ample. If you could split those up into different days then perfect. c/w/c/w/c with weekends off.

Cheers for the reply mate and i can totally see your point. I may end up adopting that but at the mo im feeling like my body is loosing the fat quicker with the extra 2 cardio sessions.

Forgot to mention that when i do the cardio its about 25/30 min on the cross trainer and then i do a few planks or captains chair.

I dont feel any worse for it energy wise and my stamina is increasing as well which is a great bonus. +++

Sounds like it's working well for you bud. Weight loss is such a personal thing which is why we come at it from different angles. My aim at the moment is to get as big as possible whilst keeping a low body fat %, so when I look to lose a couple of ponds I do it slowly and in a way to preserve as much muscle as possible. Cardio is the devils word to me and 2 or 3 brisk walks for 20/30 minutes per week is plenty for my goals.

Thats the thing right there, im not actually loosing weight. When i started this i was just over 13.6 stones in Jan. Now im about 13.4 and its been there for a while now but if that starts decreasing any further then i shall readuce the cario work i reckon.

I am back training since beginning of the year - including significant diet changes, which I like!

Managed to drop 8lbs, although have gained muscle mass. Dropped a couple of inches off the waist too, which whilst good, is expensive in new clothes!

Bit I struggle with is cardio, in particular running. I just cant do it for very long.

Dug out the bike recently too, which given the hills around here, is pretty had work and I am hoping this will help.

Genuinely enjoying being fitter, stronger and thinner.

I think biking can be great cardio exercise. I used to swim and run a lot when I was younger. At 41 though, I have banjoed both my knees, I get shin splints and I have had both shoulders operated on for arthritis due to the swimming :P

Getting out on the bike is great and it can be as hard or as easy as you want it. Cardio work in a gym bores the crap out of me, nothing worse than looking at 4 walls for an hour, so biking suits me. I still get a bit of knee pain but nothing I can't manage. I also find mountain biking a great stress reliever.

With the exception of the odd drink or two, I've always tried to look after myself and I'm probably as fit as I was 20 years ago, other than the bits that are crumbling away.

Good route around Bath that will get you fit(ter) is:

Bannerdown

A36

American museum

Brassknocker

Past uni, down into town

Up to lansdown

Down into Weston

Up Bathford to Kingsdown

Down into South Wraxxal

Go anybody not local - a lot of hills... :-)

Well, I've started back on the fitness trail after my hernia op. I've done three mtb rides now going faster/further on each ride. Last one about 22 miles. I've also started back on the running, using the iPhone ap that gets you up to 5k. Done that twice this week and really enjoyed it. That has to be the best iPhone fitness ap you can buy. Anyone who wants to start running very gradually and hasn't run in literally years. This is the ap for you. I'm out biking again on Sunday and will be tackling a hill known locally as 'DEATH'. That's going up!

Walk, jog its all about getting out and doing something. If you follow the ap to the letter, it's amazing how quickly you can improve and be running pretty easily. Also it makes me give the beer/wine a miss on the days I run and the night before I do a big mtb ride which saves a few calories too.

You need a better gym.

I generally have the choice of watching the girlies in the pool, watching TV, or I can plug my iPhone in and watch films.

Generally, I do the pool watching and listen to music, though.

Our local Bannatynes has TV's on every machine with 50 channels, ipod stuff, radio etc etc, and I still get bored off my tits.

Sitting in one spot doing a repetitive motion is just as boring as it gets.

It's a mental obstacle with you then. Something else you need to overcome.

I get the same way when I have to paint a room in the house, after the first wall I could commit suicide rather than continue the same monotonous motion.

It's a mental obstacle I won't overcome, simply because I don't want to!

I'd rather just run or cycle outside in the real world where the scenery changes and you're not surrounded by the hardcore gym types.

The added bonus is that it doesn't cost me £50 a month, I can't see any downsides?

Good for you +++

Sounds like "DEATH' would be more fun coming down. Is it long, twisty, techy, root etc?

Death, It starts off grassy and pretty easy then goes up like the north face of the Eiger. It's rocky and spits large stones out at anyone behind you, one reason not to be last going up! It's a biatch of a climb. Great when you can tame it but when it's wet it's near impossible.
