A6 3.0TDI versus 3.0TFSI

And at launch the C6 A6 had a 225ps 3.0 TDi.

That was the one we test drove last time around. nfortunately they were still too new to get the deal we wanted and we ended up with the Beemer.

I think we'll probably still test drive a 3.0TFSI, but it pretty much looks like it may not be a goer and the diesel will be the way to carry on.

I don't average 30 in a quattro 2.0TFSI, never mind a twin turbo 3.0TFSI.

It's not always the way that a smaller engine makes for better fuel economy - especially in bigger cars. The worst car I've ever had for fuel was one with the smallest engine - 1979 Vauxhall Cavalier 1.3. I'd be lucky to see 20mpg in it. Partly because I was 17 and drove everywhere with my foot to the floor, and partly because the engine had to do so much work just to get the car moving. My mate had a year older car in 1.6 and it was better for fuel.

I'm getting 33.6mpg from my super speedy dull sounding 2.0 TFSI not bad really, 4mpg short of the official figure I think so not bad IMO. It doesn't have the shove of the other engines but I've been quite surprised how it feels in normal traffic, it just never really feels quick like the BMW did, will have to see what I get next.

Your A6 is the next class of car up, so is a bit heavier and is down on power from the BM as well?

That's partly cos it's not RWD. I don't know the figures, but I'd be willing to wager that turning circles for the 5 series, E class and XF are all tighter than the A6 purely for the same reason.

Agreed.

Looking at a Merc with the front wheels turned - the angles they get are amazing. another reason for being a great German station taxi!

Yeah that's exactly what it is but it doesn't hit you until you try and get in a space and need to do it three goes not because I'm bad at parking but because the car makes it impossible in one move.

The A6 is longer and wider but the restrictions FWD brings are a pain.

The only one we haven't had is the leaking Panoramic Sunroof. And that's only because we don't have the sunroof.

I loved my 3.2fsi, but took a few days to get used to it.

I kept forgetting it was NA and it always felt lethargic, but once you realise it all happens above 3500rpm I fell for it big time.

I will be honest, I bought that avant to sell on, they were all £18k at the time, 3 year old 30k miles with all the toys, and I paid £11900 for it.

but I ended up keeping it for nearly two years in the end.

It is silky smooth round town and when cruising, but hammer it and it comes alive. The beauty of a NA engine I guess.

Going back to a big diesel in the 3.0tdi was a bit of a shock and didn't like it anywhere near as much.

I managed to average 26mpg from it, would never drop below 24mpg and would do 35mpg on a run.

In fact my short 10 mile trip into the city on a morning in the 3.2 petrol returned 27mpg each morning, and the 3.0tdi was only 26mpg.

On a run the big diesel would however get 38mpg sat at 80mph where as the 35mpg figure in the petrol was at 75mph.

But still not that much in it.

I would definitely have the 3.0T over the 3.0tdi and I do around 40k miles a year.

If you are looking at the latest, current A6 tdi then that is different, that is far better economy wise and the diesel starts to make more sense.

MPG is a big factor, but shouldn't be the ruling one if you're covering 12-15k per year.

Most cars will do better mpg if driven considerately. I bet a mate who drive a Q7 3.0Tdi that my X5 would do 40+ mpg (you know the kind of drunken motoring boolax bets you make)... anyway I proved him wrong not long after getting our new X5, 41.?mpg from home to Oxford. Drove like a pussy the whole way, but it DID IT.

I suspect the 530d you have is a pre-ED engine, my 535d was and the newer engine and gearboxes make a huge difference in mpg. Shame the rest if the car has let you down as the E60/61 is a great car.

I'd drive both models back to back, see which is the nicest, then weigh up if you can justify the 25mpg the petrol will average :)

Yeah - I was genuinely excited about getting the 530d as I'd heard so many good things about the engine and about the driving ability of the car. To be fair, when it works well, it's really enjoyable to drive - certainly more so than any of the A6s we tested, where you feel like you're sitting on them, rather than in them.

But not even 200 yards from the dealer, we had the puncture warning light come on. Being a new (to us) car, we had no idea what to do with this and, as we bought it from an Audi dealer, nor did they. Turned out to be a weird anomoly, but on inspection they found one of the tyres with a huge bulge on the inside.

So within a day of having it, it was already booked in for work.

Kind of soured the relationship from the outset.

Petrol A6 Avants seem as rare as rocking horse pop and we were never in a position to buy when one was available.

I still think the 4.2 V8 C6 A6 Avant is THE stealthiest ever fast Audi! Rarer than a straight Italian politican though: I looked on Autotrader and Pistonheads the other day after my 'ski slope' post regarding the benefits of quattro and winter tyres (that car was a 4.2) but I couldn't find one - estate or saloon - for sale!!
