A6 3.0TDI versus 3.0TFSI

I still think the 4.2 V8 C6 A6 Avant is THE stealthiest ever fast Audi! Rarer than a straight Italian politican though: I looked on Autotrader and Pistonheads the other day after my 'ski slope' post regarding the benefits of quattro and winter tyres (that car was a 4.2) but I couldn't find one - estate or saloon - for sale!!

I have found loads of saloons.

Some cheaper than the C5 4.2 Avant advertised on Autotrader.

From £7K!

They hold their value so well though - relatively speaking of course! The 4.0 diesel is probably the best compromise if you are happy with a prefacelift. In fact you can get a 4.0 facelift, on sale for about two/three months before the 4.2 diesel arrived.

Richard_W drove the 4.0 and 4.2 diesel back to back and said there wasn't much difference in performance. The 4.0 is 480 lb already, I doubt I'd be able to get away from one in the S4.

I had a 57 reg Audi A6 (C6) S-Line Avant 3.0 TDi quattro. Lovely, Lovely car. It did about 36/37 mpg average and well over 40 on long runs. I swapped it for an ex demo A6 (C6) 3.0TFSI quattro S-Line saloon in sept 2009. The petrol is a lovely engine and so refined but I'm telling you its drinks fuel big time. Ignore any figures about it doing 30mpg - its all rubbish. I have had the car 2 and a half years and its average milage is 21 MPG. Thats not at all good.

It is a great car and lovely engine, and its not slow - you have to rev it to make it goes, unlike the 3.0TDi which has a ton or torque - but honestly go for the 3.0TDi. I'm changing mine again for a new C7 Avant and i've gone back to the 3.0 TDi. The best all round for performance, and economy at the some time. You will bleed money if you go for the petrol.

A6 (C6) 3.0TFSI quattro S-Line saloon..... average milage is 21 MPG.

That is indeed rubbish - the C7 S6 will do that with its new 4.0 V8 and cylinder deactivation. However I'd imagine to get as low as 21 mpg from the 3.0 petrol you might be doing a fair bit of town / stop start driving?

Hi!

I didn't think the 2004 A6 had the DPF. In the UK, these did not appear until the 2008 models.

Another thing to try is to clean the MAF (gently). This is between the air filter and the turbo and you can see it as soon as you lift the bonnet.

Any symbols on the dashboard apart from the gears? Does the car start in N?

Hi cruiser647-No i doesnt start at all, just one click and whats it ,on Dashboard its just when you put on Drive -you can see what tiptonic stuck on 3 rd gear .Battery is new ,starter is new -i hope its not timing belt ,you can see timing belt when you open the bonnet ,its looks ok .I think all problems iss in gearbox -this is first time i was using tiptronic and something F..Up. Also i read yesterday about CanBus -sometimes its make problems -but still cant understand why car stop when i was driving .

Do you get any symbols on the dashboard display?

And I presume you know the car won't start unless in P or N. (just checking!)

I think the belt you can see under the bonnet is the alternator/power steering/air con belt. The cambelt is usually covered up to stop anything getting in.

To reply to the original question about what the fuel consumption, etc is like.... I've always found the Audi TDI's very easy to get the quoted consumption figures and if you drive like a saint, SIGNIFICANTLY above those (most experience with the 1.9TDI and 2.5TDI 180PS, but some 2.0TDI and 3.0TDI too).... and even with fairly enthusiastic driving (some acceleration / high speed cruising) won't see you fall more than about 20% below those figures...

In contrast, although it is certainly possible to get the quoted figures on the 3.0 TFSI, the mpg rating plummet with any enthusiastic acceleration or high speed cruising...

The two cars that i've taken the most notes on in the last few year: my old A4 2.5TDI quattro, quoted as 35mpg, I used to get 34-35mpg normally, the odd 40mpg tank and very seldom below 32mpg. My 3.0 TFSI is also quoted at 35mpg, I have seen over 35mpg on a couple of long, very slow drives, but I seldom see over 32mpg average and I've had a few tanks averaging 22mpg, normally averaging around 27-29mpg.

An old thread but thought I'd offer my experience of the 3.0TDi quattro. Had my 07 for 34 months and purchased with sub 80k and for £8.5k in saloon guise

I've had mine remapped for economy and have never had less than 700 miles from a tank and am doing 11k per annum.  Best case I've had 920 miles from a tank and that was brim tested and works out at 50+mpg.  Although that run included 2 x 400 mile non-stop trips up to Glasgow at silly-o'clock.  Am perhaps a more sedate driver than most as 2 days after getting the car was told had tickets to the opening ceremony of the Olympics, didn't know how to use the cruise or speed limiter and was stopped on the M4 and 6 points followed.  So a case of RTFM :(

A word of advice, don't go for an early (05 or 06) if buying the oil burner as they are fitted with inferior injectors and it's £££ to change them.

I specifically went for an 07 as it a) Had updated injectors and b) Didn't have a DPF (these came in a year later). Non DPF will have 7GN on the sticker near the spare wheel 7GG will be a DPF fitted model.

Since owning I've had a battery (sub £100 to replace) and a faulty alternator (£35 to have original refurbished).  Also you must buy VAGCOM/VCDS as it pays for itself in the first year of ownership...and you don't have to deal with £120 scans from dealers.

Only mods made are the remap, quad zausts, towbar and upgrading summer rubber to 245/45/18 Pilot Super Sports, which now means my speedo reads accurately.
