eldavo69
We'll see nearer the time. It's pretty savage in how the power is delivered and it demands total concentration when driving it quickly on the road. The other thing is that my partner for the trip is a work colleague so if I take the vRS we can share the driving too - and have heated seats, radio and a spine at the end of it too. It was rather spectacular as around 9 litres of coolant got pumped out onto the hot exhaust. Unfortunately it also closed the track for an hour - oops. Red faces all round (ok, just me then) as I was unceremoniously towed back to the pits. I kept my helmet on partly because racecar and partly to hide my shame. Oh, that's what happened? I thought you'd got lost and the truck went out to show you the way back to the paddock...

eldavo69
I bought a spare dashboard off eBay: It had the "usual" cracks in it: So I took the vinyl off: Filled the cracks with flexible filler and sanded it back: Took delivery of these bits of leather: Clipped into place: Just like that: Brushed on some high temperature fabric glue: First panel done: Top section: Moving on: Cut some holes for the defroster vents and Romeo Dunn: Then in a couple of hours I went from this: To this: And then finally, this: Now to reassemble . . .

eldavo69
It seems ridiculous how much Porsche would charge for an "extended leather" dashboard on a new 991 when i bought the glue, leather kit and a dashboard for under £200 and it took me less than 2 hours. There was never a leather dash option on the 944/968 which I think is a damn shame as it takes the utilitarian interior up a notch. eldavo69
The original had a couple of cracks (not as bad as the replacement dash though). I'm just trying to bring a bit of character to an otherwise soulless pit of dark Germanic efficiency!
Tipex
If you were to repair and recover your original dash, would you get enough back to cover the cost of the whole dash project?

Yes. Several people on the 944 forum have asked me if I'd do it on an exchange basis. I'm not interested in taking on the liability that charging for a service would bring, but I would do it for free for a friend. I'll store my dash with all the other spare parts I've got and one rainy day I might recover it and eIther eBay it or have it as an exchange for helping out a mate.
patently
Nice job. I like the concept of a "spare dashboard".
eldavo69
The car's been at the Porsche independent's for a service and some bits and bobs. They rang me to say that the power steering pump was leaking and what did I want to do; my reply "I've got a couple of spares, I'll pop one down". Another couple of hours put in and most of it's back together. Just the gauges to reconnect and the centre console to refit before finally putting the steering wheel back on

eldavo69
I promise you that I will - I'm not a fan of superfluous Porsche crests all over the trim.
eldavo69
Et Fini (ish): I've removed an aftermarket boost gauge from the panel where the Apexii boost controller went and have ordered a new carbon panel as I'm going to set the controller in it rather than on it. I'll see if I can open the case easily too as then I can spray it black rather than silver. If not then I'll wrap it in black vinyl. That silver oil temp gauge will be going for a black one too.

Rachel
What a lovely job. You have now spent 15x what you paid for the car - sdo DON'T BEND IT!
eldavo69
Haha - I paid £4k, I've spent something like £8-9k and its insured for £22k. I owe nothing on the car, it'd make me sad if it went but wouldn't impact me negatively in the financial sense (in fact quite the opposite).
