944 Turbo S - Project Time

Fired her up and drove out of the garage onto the drive, let he burble for a bit then a couple of blips to blow all the crud out of the pipes :)

First job was to jack it up to swap the passenger side wheels:

Lined up the bumper and bolted it in place on the passenger side and refitted the arch liner too before plonking it back down on its tyres.

Tried to fit the passenger seat but the mounts need to be swapped around so that'll have to wait until tomorrow. But the important seat is in and ready for use at least:

Still got the passenger side door card and window to sort out, again not a big job but also not critical to actually driving it:

Also picked up my bridge spoiler pieces from the bodyshop. All done in shiny gloss black under a protective coat of loads of dust. Will need to refurb the other hatch, fit it and then attach these spoiler parts in situ:

And as the car looks now, a lot further on than 5-6 months ago. I just need to realign those headlamp pods and then . . . etc etc:

Everyone loves a Club :D

Not even mine am afraid. LittleMissEldavo's empty wrapper along with her "junk model" that all my stuff is squashing.

These wheels have a different offset so fill the arches a bit more. Am going to get the geometry made a little less aggressive and will check clearances then as I do have spacers on the shelf.

A-pillar trim pieces and sun visor trim in, gave me something to mount the visors too and finished off the headlining at the front too:

Passenger seat in and harness installed:

But can't have them sat on the scruffy side so window regulator and plexiglass window removed:

Glass window and electric regulator replaced, door card fitted - wow, a proper interior:

Compare and contrast with when I got it:

Replaced the missing "PORSCHE" script at the rear:

And adjusted the headlight mechanism so that the buckets sit at the same height:

Filled it up with V-power and went to the Cayman launch last night, a few niggles noted - to follow.

Niggles are all noise related. Some extra road noise is to be expected with the suspension setup and lack of sound deadening but these are little irksome things.

Both door cards rattle. I thought screwing them down would prevent this but obviously not. I'll have to put some acoustic matting behind them, on the exposed door parts to stop this. The only brand I've heard of is Dynamat, googled it, saw the price :0

I don't need its acoustic properties, so may wait until my floor fitter has finished on Tuesday and if there's any laminate underlay left then I'll spray glue it in place.

Rear hatch is squeaking. I'll need to adjust the locking pins to secure it more tightly but this can wait until I swap the bridge spoiler hatch on at the same time.

I've not put the steering wheel back on quite straight, easy fix as it's one nut to sort. Not the nut behind the wheel, nope hope for him ;)

Gearstick rattles too, I think the set screws will benefit from some blue locktite and I'll put a dab of silicon under the gearshift pattern insert on the top as it isn't a tight push fit so rattles and turns slightly.

Otherwise, very very happy with the performance of the car. I'm approaching it gingerly and need to build up to the confidence I had in the last one. The previous one would struggle to light the tyres up and was very linear and predictable in its power delivery.

This car has twice the power and I struggle to make a quick getaway without the tyres scrabbling for grip. Once the turbo spools up the car just leaps forward with the most minimal throttle input. Not ideal on damp corners.

In time if I go to an electronic boost controller I'll turn the boost curve down in 1st and 2nd gear as it really is savage.

Re Dynamat type stuff, you can get much cheaper brands, I got a load of squares of it for a quid each many years ago, cheapo unbranded stuff about half a metre square, probably no good for the audio guys, but made a hell of a difference to my rattly tinny Renault 19 16v.

I still had a load of it when we moved a few years back, but it got left in a shed without a roof by accident and the weather ruined it, otherwise i'd have sent it to you.

I dare say you can find it cheaply on ebay?

Edit: yep, loads on ebay, 22x smallish squares for £8.50 for example.

Milo - it's just a car, even I can't break it properly. Mind you, if patently wanted to borrow it then I may have to invoke the fixed seat rule of you can drive it if you can reach the pedals.

I'm loving the 6'2" and over rule. Bolt the seats down. No short arses allowed +++

  • 2 weeks later...

MOT tomorrow so been sorting a few things.

When I put the front lights back in I "upgraded" all the bulbs and the sidelight ones were very blue. Pulled them out and tried some LEDs in there but they still had a slight bluish tinge so put some halogens in. Lights are much more yellow but a lot brighter and crucially MOT legal so they can stay.

Also straightened the steering wheel on the column as I'd put it back on a couple of notches out - although I'll probably find out tomorrow it was only one notch out and I've now got it one notch the other way.

The ABS works fine but when the car goes over 5mph the system self tests and the ABS light comes on and stays on. This means an electrical fault (usually a bad earth) on one of the connectors and doesn't effect the operation but would result in an MOT fail so I resorted to the tried and tested method of removing the bulb ;)

12 screws to remove the trim and cluster:

ury8ybes.jpg

I need to get under the car when I've time to reattach the undertray and fit the Seat Cupra splitter I bought. When I do, I'll sort the ABS ground fault and fix the coolant weep from the fan switch. I have done this before without draining the coolant first as I was in a rush but I'll drain the coolant and replace it with fresh as last time I got very wet!

Theoretically, the ABS lamp being removed should still fail the MOT, if they are a decent MOT centre they should check the bulb illuminates and then extinguishes as it should, so removing bulbs or taping over them shouldn't work.

In reality a more decent MOT centre should overlook it on an older car like yours!

Absolutely Tipex.

Due to the design of the instrument cluster though you can't see what the warning signs are though unless they're illuminated.

Also, unless in the know MOT testers don't expect a 1988 car to have ABS either.

Whilst on the subject I also know that my harnesses shouldn't pass an MOT as (although FIA approved for competitive motorsport) they don't have a BS or kite mark. As the tester said to me when I booked it in and queried it, there's nothing in the book about it and providing they're securely attached he doesn't have the time to be ringing VOSA for clarification. He followed that up with "is that what you wanted to hear?" with a smile.
