A:) The powdercoat will insulate it and provide cooler inlet temperatures.

B:) Red is the fastest colour.

C:) "A" might be wishful thinking

If I put a sticker on it then that's got to be worth another 5hp - actually, that's not a bad idea ;)

Well that didn't work - I misread the instructions online and short circuited the golf timer circuit so just had a word with myself and put the original part back in.

As mentioned elsewhere the oil pickup broke off in the pan and I had the car recovered to my Indy's.

The "while you're in there" jobs will consist of a hinged oil pan baffle being welded in (en route from the states) and new rod bearings (24 hour service from Type911). I'm also going to give the inlet manifold and throttle body a clean up and possibly a powdercoat too and while the front ARB is off I'll polybush it as I've been meaning to do for ages.

I have a great relationship with the garage and they're quite happy to let me muck in with the car, it helps me keep the labour rate down and helps them as they're super-busy at the moment.

I've spent a couple of hours over there with the car in their yard, removed the fuel rail and inlet manifold and ancillaries. I have complete tool envy now though, I get why snap-on stuff is expensive having had a play about - I even got bought an ice-cream by the "boss" ;)

This is where I'm up to so far:

The strut brace is still in as I just removed the bolt from one end and swung it out of the way then put the bolt back through for safe-keeping when I'd finished.

So, back in time to June.

A ridiculous amount of parts had to come off to access the sump:

But eventually we got there:

Replace it with a new one and had a support bracket welded too it so it'd never happen again (hopefully). Also had a trapdoor baffle welded into the sump to stop potential oil starvation under heavy cornering loads:

Found this little net that I had from when I had an A3 and given I have no door pockets in my carbon cards it seemed a great place to stick my phone and wallet:

Cavity waxed the sills on a nice warm July day:

And then got a bit of a horn on for braided hoses and figured I should replace the 26 year old rubber fuel return line that goes over the exhaust manifold:

I drank too much one Friday night and bought a carbon fibre armrest from eBay USA for about £80:

It made the centre console look bare so I had it trimmed in leather with red stitching and a matching gear gaiter. I also replaced the temperamental boost gauge with a new one and also added a taxi meter. The taxi meter is an Apexi AVC-R electronic boost gauge that needs quite a bit of installing, wiring in to the ECU and setting up on a rolling road but for now it made sense to mount the control unit and run the wiring:

Haha - it's a common fitment in the 944 Turbo so there's plenty of baseline settings online and then I'll get it setup on a rolling road by a guy locally who is well used to them.

There are 2 maps so I'll have one setup for maximum go and one a little more moderate for wet weather/Fizzbit

I had an AVC-R in my Skyline, how I never blew the thing up buggering about with the settings I'll never know, it's safe to say I didn't have a clue what I was doing, except that constantly increasing the boost made it go really really fast!

Danger to manifold! Did the floor ever fall out and drag along the ground during a drag race?

A year or so back I had a temperature probe fitted in the sump plug to monitor oil temps as the car doesn't have a gauge as standard.

Being a Turbo it runs quite hot and I've seen temps of 130C on track which isn't ideal. Of course there is an argument that the more info you have the more there is to worry about but I'd say that knowing whether your oil is breaking down or not is worth knowing.

The car has a factory fit oil cooler that is thermostat controlled on the driver's side of the radiator already but I'd seen that it was possible to fit another one is series on the other side as well. This seemed a better option than plonking an aftermarket cooler in front of my radiator and having to make brackets, etc.

So I assembled all the bits I needed:

I needed to open up the wiring loom to reroute some of it to make space for the cooler, I rewrapped it all in loom tape once I'd finished:

I'd also had to chop out the plastic pipe that fed the alternator with cold air so once the cooler was mounted with a small brace piece added at the bottom from some aluminium, I ran a neoprene flexi to connect the alternator back up to the cold air feed. I also got some metric to AN10 pushlock connectors for the cooler for the new oil pipes:

Try as I (and a friend too) might I could not get the 32mm nut off the original cooler so a trip to the garage was required and after a minute of oxy-acetylene it came loose and could be replaced with another pushlock hose connector:

I've not had the opportunity to use it in anger yet but once run up to temperature the thermostat opened and the oil light came on. This was great news as it took another litre of oil so I get the double whammy of extra air cooling and more oil capacity too.

Just to put the undertrays back on and use it now, hmmm winter trackdays are cheap . . .

February's job was the cam belt and balance belt. They need doing every 4 years and the recommendation is to change all the tensioner rollers and the waterpump every other belt change too. They weren't done at the last one before I got the car so this was a biggy. If that much is coming apart then a front end reseal may as well happen to cure several minor (and one not so minor) oil leaks.

Handed this one over to my local indy's as it's a pretty involved job, this picture is after the cam tower was back on but still shows how much is removed:

The beginning of March was new exhaust time - I booked it in October!!!

Custom made 3" exhaust with a centre silencer delete and a bung fitted for my recent purchase of an Innovate Motorsports AFR gauge.

Went for an oval tip that was OEM+

I also finished wiring my "taxi meter" Apexi AVC-R electronic boost controller in, lots of time spent carefully splicing into various parts of the main wiring harness but all working:
