Woohoo!

All the bodywork in the picture has been painted and rubbed down now and the bumper has been repaired.

Next step is to put the car back together completely and another coat of paint to blend it all in then the windscreen can go in.

No pictures as it was all under plastic sheeting taped down but what I could see looked bloody brilliant!

Well she's nearly ready, windscreen fitter booked for next Friday and then get her towed home either at the weekend or the following week.

Bumper looks loads better with the headlight nozzles removed and the holes smoothed. Paint finish looks a good match although it'll get another rub down and blow over so it can be properly blended in.

Just need to get the right rubber trim strip for the windscreen but a friend round the corner thinks he has one (will call Porsche to see how much they want for a new one - they tend to be very reasonable or ridiculously expensive for parts).

Wing is obviously a different colour but that is only the first colour coat:

Bumper and badge panel repaired and fitted, need a bit more work and then final alignment (Fiat 500 shell in the background):

Bumper and badge panel repairs still in progress, looks much cleaner without the washer nozzles though:

Well, it's nearly done!!!

The headlight cover, wing mirror and roof trim where just being flatted back ready for a polish and refit when I called in this morning. Windscreen is being fitted tomorrow.

Got to wait for the snow to clear a bit so I can get it towed back to my garage to refit the dash, interior and the set of black carpets I picked up last week.

The bill has yet to paid but is about £50 LESS than my quote even though I've asked for other bits to be done along the way, it's getting rounded up to the nearest hundred and a decent bottle of whiskey added too though.

Paintwork is a really good match (especially as its metallic silver), looks a bit off on the picture but that's due to the light and the bonnet being dusty as hell.

About to order my carbon door cards now ;)

The guy doing my work just has a little double unit - one room has a lift in it and the other has loads of strip lights and a couple of heaters and is his paint room.

The roof leaks in the lift room, there's various cars in and out where he does bumper scuffs and dents, etc. the projects get fitted in and around.

He was recommended, an old school approach to car repairs, seen it all before and if he hasn't got the part he just makes it. He was repairing the HF Turbo sills, just cut out the rust made a cardboard template and got to it. He's now respraying that car and it looks fab!

I won't be hesitating to recommend him to anyone else in this neck of the woods who needs anything doing.

Dan - the cost will make you weep ;)

The clock surround trim was cracked so bought a new bit from Porsche - £22, bargain.

Problem was that it was a nice deep black colour compared to the browny colour of the 20-odd year old stuff.

I'd already sprayed the gear surround gloss black so out came the plastic primer to shoot a coat over the other trim pieces:

After:

Will leave it to dry overnight and shoot a couple of light coats of gloss black over it tomorrow and maybe a lacquer coat if I get time.

May I be so bold as to ask why carbon door cards?

I can understand it in Mooks toy, but weight saving must be negligible at best and given that doesn't seem to be of major concern to you i'm just wondering why?

At a guess, i'd say it's down to lack of decent original parts to fit? But it's probably just because 'you like them'.

Yes dear :P

Dave - shout if you want some red door strap material (like in the pic that Banglicious linked to the post). The only option I had was to buy a 5m length of it when I did the door straps on my car, so I've got a load left over +++

Just cut it with a Stanley knife and then melt the ends to stop it fraying.

Send him a 3m length. It'll double up as a tow rope when he needs pulling out of the next field.

A lightweight tow rope? Where did you get it from, Mook? :uhoh:

I've got a proper tow strap on the front of the car - rear one is integral to the chassis so don't care.

Tell you what, though - Dave could double up his door straps as tow straps - just hook the tow truck through each open window, strap on and away you go :P

Carbon door cards are coming from ClubAutoSport in Birmingham. They have GRP ones in stock but the CF parts are vac formed to their spec elsewhere.

There is a composites place near me that are currently remaking all the ABS plastic parts of my mate's Atom in Carbon but I'd rather buy the parts that fit than be a guinea pig.

Door cards are available, there's a pair in black leather on eBay for £100. The problem is that they have big holes in them for the speakers and door pockets, etc. I'm building the car up as a fast road/track spec and the speakers and radio, etc. went a long time ago.

GRP were half the cost of carbon but I got sent the pictures of the two and it was "look what you could've won."

Will be fitting them and attempting to replace the interior door handles with red webbing in the RS style, you can still buy the RS door fit meant parts relatively inexpensively so I "should" be able to make a good job out of it :)

Started typing my response before my meeting and finished it afterwards, thanks for the offers/abuse.

Yes Mook, that would be great; guy at ClubAutoSport suggested I buy a couple of dog leads!

Was originally going to get the door cards from EMC in Birmingham but found out that they buy them from ClubAutoSport and add 20% on the price so dealt direct.

Oh FFS!!!!

Car finished, car paid for (and a bottle of Glenlivet too) windscreen being fitted today.

Had a call from the fitter that the screen has a crack in it, went back to the bodyshop to inspect it after my meeting had finished. Hairline crack in the black outer section of the screen that's invisible to the naked eye but is there nonetheless.

Rang the fitter back and asked what the most cost effective way of replacing the screen is. He suggested wait until putting the car back on the road (March hopefully) and he'll replace the screen for my £75 windscreen excess.

Screen shows no sign of impact and it may be a transportation fault, etc but as the screen was delivered over a month ago the supplying company won't accept any liability. So, it might be the bodyshop guy's fault, it might not. He was very humble and couldn't understand how it had happened.

I discussed the excess option and suggested that rather than get into who would pay what that he painted my bridge spoiler parts in gloss black before I reassembled them and I'd sort the excess. Deal.

DanG - you're right in that it's never that straightforward!

I would have felt bad if Gordon had stumped up the excess given the fact I only paid £700 for all the work. Better to keep him onside for the future methinks ;)

Not exactly a Mark Hales vs David Piper situation but it's a nice feeling when everyone gets along.
