a8starr
Hi everyone I am new to the forum. I bought a 2004 Audi A8 from a private seller on the 14th of November car seemed perfect. It looked a very good buy with a full service history and a low mileage of 70k. Its my first Audi and I am really happy with it. I did do some research into possible issues to be had with this car but nothing I found seemed to warn of possible injector failure. Just over 1 week ago I noticed thick white smoke from the exhaust after start up. I kept the car idling and smoke continued steadily . I revved and loads of smoke piled out. I drove away concerned and the smoke disappeared after less than 3 minutes. The car appeared to be normal. I booked it into a local independent garage. They checked the oil and discovered it was much too full so they drained it. They also plugged It into the computer and it came up with only 1 small error on the control head. After a few days of feeling hopeful the smoke reappeared (See Video below) This time less thick but still white and smelt like oil/diesel. Cardiff Audi had a look at it on their diagnostics and found 3 injectors had faults. They suggested replacing all 6. To replace all 6 injectors is going to cost £2987 - OUCH Has anyone had a similar issue on this forum or had any success with Audi contributing to the extortionate repair cost? Any advice or help would be much appreciated.
cruiser647
Welcome to TSN, sad to hear it's with such an issue though. Injector failure. Not nice. What diesel do you use? Stick in some proper stuff, like Shell/BP and/or the Shell V-Power diesel. This should help clean the injectors, as it is possible they are getting clogged from crap diesel. I ONLY use Shell fuels in both of our cars. No issues. However, you might also invest in some Millers Diesel Plus injector cleaner and use double or triple the doses they say. It's circa £20? You have nowt to lose trying it? Hope this helps, and let us know please.
cabby
Welcome to TSN, and I can relate to your predicament. Have a loose at this http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/dealer-supplier-specialist/110329-watson-diesel-wimbledon.html. Not sure where you are based but hope this helps in one way or another. Just saw reference to Cardiff so guessing these guys are not so conveniently located .

On a less positive note, my X5 issues were never properly cured so I would also give some thought to moving on your A8 if you cannot cheaply and easily resolve. Let us know how you get on. shark_90
Just about any specialist will be able to do the job for a fraction of the price. You could have your injectors reconditioned, or buy new ones at much less than the cost from Audi from any diesel specialist injector centre. sloss
You say the oil level was far too high. That coupled with white smoke looks like a coolant problem to me. Did you see the oil they drained off, was it a grey mess? They should have done an oil & filter change anyway.
snapdragon
It's far more likely the oil was diluted by the diesel, it's a very common problem and documented by VAG.
a8starr
I had 6 injectors replaced by an independent (Euro Performance in Pontyclun) Still £2.5k I have noticed some smoke again from exhaust. This time it smells like coolant I think. So the above images were probably a mixture of diesel, oil (from being too full), and Coolant. Now its just the coolant? I got the car back late friday(7th Dec) afternoon. I noticed some smoke from exhaust on the saturday morning just gone. It was cold so thought it would just be condensation. It disappeared whilst driving but returned when parking at supermarket. Yesterday (Sunday) I started the car for the first time at around 12pm mid day and this is what I noticed whilst moving out of the driveway which is on a slight incline. It did smell like coolant. Totally different to how it originally smelt when it was probably a mixture of Coolant, diesel and oil.
