s3roy
Hello lads, its my first post on here and have read a lot of where to go and who is the best place to tune an 8p 57 plate jan 08 S3 with 46000 on the clock Its pretty stock at the moment apart from a celtic stage 1 remap and a bmc air filter since the remap done about 18 months ago which made a considerable difference, but the clutch slips for about a second when i give it a bit of stick, secondly apart from a stage 2 or 3 remap and a milltek turbo back, and or a uprated fuel pump which one/s do I go for that offers best speed and reliability. a lot of people say alot of things so im confused,( easy done) I live in Kent near blue water if any one could help ? Thank you in advance bewilderd Roy
Calm Chris
Roy power might be desired, but what about the accessories that should go with? You would be better off with hd clutch plates, hd / clutch racing springs and likely a brake upgrade. The clutch slip issue suggests (in a Scotty from Star Trek accent) "she canna take it". What dyno figures to you have at the moment for the current remap, and has it hurt the insurance cost?
s3roy
Hello Chris thanks for the reply, I have read on here about the dual mass clutches and how some people rate them and some dont so i think its personnal preference , as for the brakes they handle the power fine at the moment, Celtic tuning advertise the remap at 310 bhp about , I have not had the car on a dyno to prove or disprove this. so really is it a new exhaust, clutch, and stage 2/3 , and possibly a uprated fuel pump and then im fine or is there more to it? shao_khan
Hi, Welcome to Tyresmoke. Stage 1 maps are pretty standard -all around the 300-310hp. IF you want to go further and you really want some kind of guarentees you want to look at one of the german tuners such as MTM or Oettinger as they offer i think TUV and Warrented conversions, offering slightly lower published gains than some tuners. RSD in daventry are official Oettinger partner, not sure who MTM is as last time i enquired about the product i dot some w@nker on the phone and ive never looked at the produt since. In germany though is a good brand. Otherwise look at a good knowledgable place such as Shark Performance who will actually talk about options with benefits and potential pitfall advice. I thought the stock brakes on my S3 were possibly weakest part of the car, after spirited driving they quickly began to fade.
Ian_C
Your MTM 340 hurt my kidneys in the first three gears, that had serious pull.
shao_khan
That wasnt MTM though - I wouldnt touch them in this country (subject to previous remarks above).
Ian_C
Forgive me - who was the tuner there?
s3roy
I dont really drive the car to its limits very often ,,, mostly when a flash lad in a v8 m3 thinks he rules the carrigeway then they get a shock when they cant pull away or lose me, I am used to the speed now and was wondering what the next best step would be, I spoke to a young lad who had a dsg version also had a full milltek and a uprated fuel pump ( he said the pump was £800 alone) his car left mine quite easy but £800 for a pump seems a bit excessive . any thoughts ? s3roy
Thanks Eldavo, I have just been looking at their site, its pretty comprehensive , a phone call is in order it think. Thanks again Roy
shao_khan
So of the quotes with remap / exhaust and fuel pump quote 100bhp gains from standard, so I'd be suprised if you saw the differences between yours and his tbh, I appreciate it would be quicker but I'm suprised it was huge. If you really want omph then I'd save up and look at one of the larger turbo conversions with rebuilt lump to take the higher revs and larger boost Again I'm sure Shark could advise on that. shao_khan
Forgive me - who was the tuner there? I had somework done by APR (remap), then some more done by VW Racing (fuel pump, return valve, different map, couple of other bits and bobs). I do miss the performance at times, given my current 130bhp steed is sluggish on the best of days!!!
s3roy
It was very noticeable when the remap was done, I cant remember if i was told to use v power by anyone when I bought the car ( I should have known I suppose) but it just happened i was very low and the petrol station happend to be shell i filled up with v power and after about 50 -60 miles it was very noticeable the difference that made also . Im not sure if I would go down the larger turbo and engine rebuild on a car that is nearlly 5 years old now as I would never recoup the huge outlay, If it was newer and I was to be keeping it for two more years then perhaps, I will probably be looking to sell it in the summer and then get a newer sportback with the s tronic if poss. and then have the work you mentioned , but who knows that is just more expense aswell so im stuck which ever way really ((
shao_khan
I'd have thought that the cost of swapping probably is more than the cost of modifying the car to a level you'd be happy. If you opt to swap try an S4 with the V6 engine - thats a nice drive and theyve dropped to low £20k's for not high mileage examples (sub 50k miles), and some of the demo cars arent much more expensive than demo S3 sportbacks with auto - looking at Audi the other day about £6k between the two cars both in decent specs. THe S4 modified is in a different league to the S3.

Ian_C
The [3.0 litre V6] S4 modified is in a different league to the S3. Guy I bought a set of winter wheels from just had his B8 S4 stage one mapped at MRC, £750 iirc, no other mods bar a fresh air filter, it rolled at 462 bhp. MRCs own DSG (S Tronic) S4 was clocking 3.3 seconds to 60 and the 1/4 mile in 11.8 at GTI International this summer with a few additional mods such as the exhaust and only marginally more power. Mac
I dont really drive the car to its limits very often ,,, mostly when a flash lad in a v8 m3 thinks he rules the carrigeway then they get a shock when they cant pull away or lose meany thoughts ? I lol'd. Having owned a heavily modded previous gen S3 and driven a mod'ed new one I find this slightly comical You can do that in pretty much any car on the road can't you if you want? Stay on somebody? They may pull a gap for a while but more often than not you'll get them in traffic anyways. It doesn't really say much for either cars performance does it. EDITed to add, apart from the mapping, do people bang in bigger turbos and exhausts on these now? I always remember on my S3 the original map making loads of difference, but the low-cat exhaust just making it louder? According to AMD it was kicking out over 300BHP though, was never convinced. Mook
Bicester-based AmD dyno figures... Anyone can keep up with Mac in his V8 M3 - he'll still be going through the startup routine by the teim you;re half way up the road That S3 engine with a remap and a full Milltek will go to 330-340bhp without any problems and the clutch will hold it as well. Unless you're taking the car anywhere near a track, you won't need to upgrade the brakes. Remap will be £500 or less. Add a full Milltek with a hi-flow sports cat and that'll be another £1500 or so. I'd try the remap first and if - well, when, really :D - you decide you want more power, then get the Milltek and an updated remap to go with it. Ben at Shark Performance is your person, and they're an authorised Milltek dealer. HTH
s3roy
Hello Lads, I managed to get hold of a Milltek turbo back de cat exhaust (resonated) only 4 months old for £450 saturday and had it put on yesterday.... what a difference the car pulls like mad revs so much better and its only got a stage one remap ( as in prev post) this with a bmc filter.I have no idea how many bhp it has but its far far better than it was without it. I know and have read that so many people do so much more and spend £'s and £'s money running and knowing when to stop, I have to hold back a bit for now. There are people on here that are very knowledgeable and know more than I ever will about what and how to do things to a car and how they should be set up etc so I thank you all for your input and answers they all helped greatly . if there is anyone in kent, essex surry way who could help out with a few coding issues that would be most helpful. thanks again lads and all the best
