Fuel Sender Change = Diesel Everywhere

Hi - I'm after some advice please. A local garage replaced the sender units as fuel gauge wasn't working. I filled up and noticed that after a short distance I had used a lot of diesel. The following morning inside of car stank of diesel so took it back to the local garage. They tightened the large white bracket and said it was fixed. Had a 40 min drive where the smell of diesel made me feel sick - got to work to find a large spray of diesel down the side of the car from the tank. AA came out and said that the seal hadn't been fitted properly - took it back to garage and they changed the seal and the large white bracket. I'm not loosing diesel anymore but I just can't get rid of the smell in the car. It's not really bad but it is there and irritates my throat.

I've washed the outside and inside and tried jet washing underneath. Any ideas what I can do to get rid of the smell? It's almost impossible to drive at the moment...

Thanks

Hi!

Not sure what you will need to get rid of that smell. It lingers for ages even after washing with fairy liquid and all sorts.

It will fade with time, but it depends upon where it soaked into.

Maybe a proper carpet & upholstery cleaning man could help? Might by beyond your 'normal' valeter type?

I'd ask the garage for money to pay for it.

This is exactly what happened to me in my old A4!

They replaced the sender unit but pinched the seal when tightening up the inspection hatch under the rear seat.

So when I filled up petrol poured out of the underside of the car - its designed to do this but does fill the car with vapour regardless as it runs down under the seat.

Roadside assist drained the tank enough to stop the deluge and it was flat bedded back to the dealer.

Cost me half a tank and a lot of woe. Car was returned to dealer who were useless and didn't want to know about the fuel cost or a proper valet. They eventually offered a 'valet clean' and a tank of fuel, but it was too little, too late.

It cost them my business, but the amount of fuel literally streaming out of the car was incredibly dangerous.

I smelt fuel when I collected it from the dealer in the first place, I should have said something then. D'oh.

Anyway, it shouldn't have gotten into anywhere that can't be cleaned, probably all over the tank under the seat.

I would be straight onto the dealer or garage for a clean, a proper professional one and not just a vacuum and magic tree...

Hi - Thanks for the replies. I forgot tot add that they had already filled up my tank so they have tried.

However I've taken it back to the garage again and they told me that they put it up on a ramp and have scrubbed the underside of the car with degreaser. The seat was so cold when I got in that they had also left the windows down all day! They bunged in a couple of air fresheners and I have to say that it may have fixed it. The reason I think this is because the fuel tank side of the car used to really smell when you approached the car and it and it doesn't now. I've had a couple of 40 min drives and it seems OK. Next step is to remove the air freshener and check again.

Fortunately there was only a small leak under the seat (that you can see in the photo) so it didn't go on the carpet. It was nearly all on the underside and the tank - I did wonder if it had got in to the seat - but it seems OK.

Let's see how it goes :)

Thanks again...
