The car isn't even on the market yet, nevertheless, the first Barry Boy edition has been announced:

What the "Edition 1" brings to Stuttgart's hottest hatch is some custom styling touches, while also ticking most boxes on the options list, for a more affordable price than if ordered separately.

On the outside, the A45 AMG is finished in a 'Cirrus White' paint job and gets sports stripes in matt graphite grey on the bonnet, roof and sides, a standard Aerodynamics package that adds a rear wing, extra flics on the front apron and a larger front splitter.

Furthermore, the mirror, front grille, brake calipers and the rear wing come with red accent paint, and the car rides on black 19-inch wheels with a red center cap and tires size 235/35 R 19.

Black and red are the dominant colors in the interior of the A 45 AMG "Edition 1", which boasts "AMG Performance seats" in ARTICO man-made leather and DINAMICA microfiber, with the same material used on the top section of the dashboard. Other notable changes include the steering wheel dressed in nappa leather and DINAMICA microfiber, SELECT lever with embossed AMG emblem and the "Edition 1" badge on the AMG DRIVE UNIT.

There are no performance upgrades with the Edition 1 fitted with the same 355hp (360PS) 2.0-litre turbo engine as the standard A45 AMG.

Pricing for the special edition model as well as the regular A45 AMG will be announced after its world premiere at the Geneva Auto Salon.

Merc are getting desperate. Have they realised their core buyers are all about to die of old age, or something?

I disagree. I never liked merc for exactly that reason, but today their new cars are far more exciting than that of the competition. Take this new c63 with over 500bhp. It looks sensational with all it's go faster kit. The black looks incredible, seen a couple in the flesh and they really get my juices going. The e92 m3 is left behind IMHO, and I own one so not biased. Trouble is e92 m3's are bargains now. It's not worth the swap today but I'm keeping my eye on prices of 500bhp version.

This new a class my look dull in the pics but I saw a vanilla version and it looked great. Need to see this in the flesh before I comment. Looks great on the inside and you can't really complain about 360bhp! Only issue for me is I don't like turbos as they suck all the sound out the zorst.

That's kind of the point, Wopps. Their mainstream models are all quite dull so they are introducing silly-speed halo models that look ridiculously blinged-up and which Clarkson can't drive in a straight line for toffee.

So they get some appeal fo da yoof, but the problem is still there with the run-of-the-mill cars. Ignore the AMGs for a moment, and compare an E220 to a 520. The E looks dull, pure & simple. Same with the vanilla C-class vs a 3 series.

I think the current range of Mercs is nice, much classier than the BMW's, no one wants a BMW as a wedding car for example.

I do however agree that they are going to far with the boy racer mods, it's like they are aiming them at the wrong generation, Wopps is still young enough to be into all that, but the core customers of the AMG range have outgrown all that, there aren't many young people that can afford an AMG, and by the time they can, they aren't so young any more!

Top of the range 7 series? And if you were late an M5.

Personally I'd take the M5 every day, but sit a Merc next to it's equivalent BMW and people will choose the Merc for their wedding every single time.

It's all about image and brand perception, we might all take a BMW over a Merc to own, but probably not for our weddings, and joe public won't even consider BMW's as wedding cars, believe me, we've tried!

I have to smile at this A45 getting negative comments for being OTT.

It wasn't long ago TSN panned the RS3 for being to subtle.

#Cant Win

It's about balance though isn't it?

You can take the sporty theme too far, much like Mitsubishi did with the Evo, stick to many bits on and it looks chavvy, VW have got it right with most generations of the Golf GTi.

True, but it's about getting the balance right for the people you're aiming the car at. For me, I want a car that looks subtly special, but without shouting "Nutter in a Evo" or "Chav kid pretending to be in a race car". That's quite a fine line.

So yes, I'm fussy, but if I'm buying a £75k car then I'm going to be.

Which is why the 'normal' A45 is subtle. Do not forget this is a special edition so I think Merc should be praised for offering something a bit different.

Looking on the BMW website there are 3 or 4 variants of the M3 (special editions). You would be hard pushed to tell one from the other.

And I think this A45 will come in around the £40-£45k mark and not £75k.

The standard A45 will be around £35k I would think.
