I saw an immaculate 928 on someones driveway today, on a private plate but must have been one of the last, stunning thing, would dearly love to own one, but they are allegedly massive money pits and horrendously unreliable, which isn't what you'd expect from a Porsche?

What's the 968 like in that respect?

I like the 928 too, nearly all are autos though, and I recall something about canbus or mulltiplex-style wiring meaning that electrical problems are a pig to fix. Plus, they're old cars now and I wanted more of a sportscar than GT. Dr Octane was leaning on me to go halves on a manual 928 he found for £1500 recently. The 968 is a development of the 944, so pretty simple, and not as old a design as the 928. The trim and bits all seem very robust and although the engine has the variocam thing (as seen in the 911 993) it has a good rep for handling miles. The dealer gave me a 3 month waranty on my car, which considering it has done 100k miles, is an indication of their confidence (I hope). I'm not overly worried about reliability, but who knows.. it's nearly 19 years old.

Shiny. Moar pics :D

Ta. Yeah, got some, was storing them up for use on a feature about the car but will stick a few up later ;)

As of a couple of years back now dealers have to give three months warranty by law now I think? +++

Someone might be able to clarify, but I got the impression this was done in an effort to try and stop home traders (who are not the V5 holder)

Washing the drying towels will make them absorbant - although no softer.

The Varioram system is not a cam thing, but an air intake or adjustable length ITB type of arrangement*. Apart from occasional issues with the vacuum pumps which change the intake lengths, its a robust and reliable system and one not to be scared of.

(*there ends my understanding of air pulses and resonance chambers)

  • 4 weeks later...

My friend had a nice day on Saturday, until he parked round the corner from someone spray-painting some parts yellow, outdoors and downwind of his spotless black car. Resulting in this:

These pics are post-cleaning (bucket, sponge, towel), the bonnet and front wings are worse, it's not visible from 1m away but up close you can see and feel it. No-one is to blame, and luckily my friend wasn't too upset, but I think he will be if this can't be cleaned off without too much hassle.

Any tips, please ?

You may have to get a detailer on that overspray. In which case you could adopt the lazy man's way to keep a car clean. Get the car detailed once and a good sealant applied. Then once a week go over it with a detailing spray (using good quality cloths). Half an hour a week tops. I have never washed a car in four years and my friends think I am an anal car cleaning freak. How little they know.

Try claying the car, the intended use for a clay bar was to remove paint overspray before the "detailing" brigade got hold of it.

Try an over the counter one first but you may need something a little more aggressive if that isn't sufficient. The problem then is that a more aggressive clay will mark the paint so it'll need polishing (ideally by machine) afterwards - hence use the mildest first.

Using some Autoglym tar remover may help soften it up first as well. You'll need to repolish and wax the areas again afterwards too.

As Eldavo says, clay it.

You'll get a clay bar kit from Halfords or somewhere, and it's dead easy, just make sure you keep the bar and panel lubricated with the spray that comes in the kit, and turn the clay regularly.

You'll be amazed at how much dirt comes off what looks like clean paint too.

I've got a spare bar of Sonos Green clay somewhere, if I can find it before wednesday, i'll bring it with me.

F*ck all that bollox, "wash 1" at your local Arc car wash will see a man jet wash the car to get the stubborn bits off, before you go through the machine, then once every six months or so 'treat' the car to an "ultimate wax" wash for £8.

It's great because you don't have to stand around talking to people like in a Polski wash, and it's over in minutes.

Is that where you take the Orion?? :)
