It was very flattering of United's reserve keeper to label Giggs "the next Guardiola", but I'm not sure it really merited top billing on BBC Sport.

He could very well turn out to be, and I am warming to the idea of making him permanent manager if he does well in this little probation spell... but I agree, typical of our media (and many fans) to get completely carried away with it all.

Also typical of the media to talk purely in terms of winning these four matches he has. For me, results in those matches are irrelevant. It's how he handles the media and what goes on behind closed doors at Carrington and in the board room that matter.

Wow! So if he lost all four games 0-4 but was great with the media and the board loved him, you'd rather have him made permanent manager than if he won all four games 4-0 but did bad press conferences and didn't kiss the board's behinds?

Personally, I think it would be absolute barking insanity to appoint someone with next to no coaching experience to oversee a 200 million pound rebuilding of a fractured, traumatised Man Utd squad with European qualification being essentially mandatory.

Being realistic, if he lost the last three games 4-0 that would point to something being significantly wrong. What I'm sure you really appreciate I'm saying is that with such a job it is how he handles himself in all kinds of situations that will be entirely new to him that matters more than outright results in three largely meaningless league games. It is the signs of being able to handle the job, having a vision for success next season and beyond, a crystal clear almost sociopathic focus on what the whole job entails.

It would be a huge ask to give him the role, for all the reasons you mention, and it does go against the grain for me - I think he needs to learn the craft at a lower level, or have more time and success as youth and/or reserve coach - but very occasionally it can work.

It isn't even up for debate in my view.  They'll appoint Van Gaal and nothing will stop that now.

Giggs will move on.

We cannot put what is needed, as James says, in his hands.  I don't want Van Gaal particularly, but to get rid of Moyes and then appoint a man with zero experience would be absolute madness.  If the players don't want to play for anyone else, then we sell them.  Simple.

I did say I felt this was the year of Real Madrid.

Bayern were awful, but Real were brilliant.  Their strength and pace was just too much for the Germans who I thought resorted to some quite appalling unsporting tactics of doing their utmost to get players sent off.

I was a bit disappointed it didn't all kick off properly. It was looking like at least two from each side being sent off. Quite amusing watching all the play acting and handbags when it;'s not your team.

Before the game I thought Bayern would win the tie, largely due to Real's defensive frailties. I didn't bargain for kamikaze tactics and diabolical defending which basically gifted the match in the first ten minutes.

Indeed.  Had we not conceded so soon after scoring, who knows?  We'd have probably still lost but had Mata been eligible it may have been a very different story.

I was impressed with how Real did defensively.  Robben got the ball and 3 players ran to him like Usain Bolt off the blocks.  Regimented, disciplined and the work ethic and pace with which they circled him was key in my opinion.

I listened to the Chelsea match en route from the South coast.  I don't think you can blame Jose although the Azpliluecueta (sp?) choice of position may be criticised by some.  Atletico are just a very, very good side and the final will be much more entertaining to watch now.

The fact remains though that despite Mourinho's record overall, his Champions League semi-final record is a very poor one.

He has taken teams to 8 semi-finals in the Champions League.

He has lost in 6 of them. :roflmao:

p.s. the final also has another interesting element, possibly.

UEFA have apparently invited someone to present the trophy to the winners.

It won't be Platini this time.

The individual they have invited is considering their offer.

It is Sir Alex Ferguson.

Wouldn't that be somewhat special for Ronaldo?
