By the way, I should probably claim my own irrational negativity towards John Terry. I'm sure the evidence suggests he gave his all for England, but all I see is a dodgy second division footballer with a big mouth and no morals who never looked out for anything or anyone but himself.

He used to be good. And there just weren't any young talents snapping at his heels to keep him honest.

There is a subtle difference though.

Our Armed Forces deliver their best wherever they go, willingly or not, regardless of their belief in the cause or policy.

Our national football players often look as if they would rather be elsewhere.

We have a national team manager who I have a lot of respect for.  But should he be England manager?  No.  He was chosen because he was politically safe.

But it isn't his fault.  His tactics are defensive, yes.  We're boring to watch, yes.  All of that.  However, where is the passion from the players?  I haven't seen it in a very long time.  Redknapp has already disclosed that 2-3 of the players don't want to play for Hodgson.  I wouldn't care who the manager was if I was chosen to represent my country.  It is the ultimate footballing accolade - but I honestly don't think players see it like that now.  The Champions League rules.

Do you want to miss that tie on Wednesday because of a qualifier against Moldova on the Thursday before?  No.  It'll impact your wages, your likelihood of losing what is now a lucrative team place domestically and so on.

But this doesn't stop Spain, or Brazilians.  They still bring passion onto the pitch and go for it - yet our players seem to have adopted the mindset that it doesn't matter because we're crap anyway, so why try?  Why risk your domestic millions?

Then we have the lack of technical ability.  We shouldn't have one Rooney (technically brilliant, although I still think he's a prick).  We need 6-7 of them.  You need to go a long way back to find real technical quality in England players.  Waddle, Barnes, Gascoigne, Beardsley, all technically superb.  Then you go look at Hoddle, Le Tissier (shambolic that he didn't get a regular place), and plenty of others.  My point is, the only England player who scares the opposition now is Rooney.  We're seen as difficult to break down because of how defensive we are, but the opposition know they're unlikely to lose against us in major competitions because we lack technical ability and any attacking ambition.

The FA are to blame for all of that.  They've allowed the national team place to be made out to be something that doesn't really mean much.  They're invested in the likes of the new training centre....about 30 years too late!

We are years behind the other nations and all we're any good at is defending and even that is becoming questionable now.

Not to worry, we've always had good keepers...

Oh hang on, we've kept Joe Hart in goal.  Bizarre.

Roy Hodgson is the perfect manager for this team right now, given what you've just said about our (lack of) technical ability. I also think he was a cheap appointment in light of having two very well paid managers beforehand who couldn't do anything to make them any better. Why give Tottenham a massive payout for 'Onest 'Arry when what was needed was less publicity and more, steady results?

I think the FA are making the best decisions in a long time. This appointment, the Training Centre and other youth training stuff.

Indeed, and I think that was a catastrophic mistake on his part.

I will not be in the slightest bit surprised if we lose tonight.

I don't think we will, but I won't be surprised if we do.  The tabloids tomorrow will not be a pretty sight if we don't qualify.

I expect a 2-1 win for England and lots of nerves.  I'm going to sit in our conservatory to watch it.  That way I won't damage the main TV if it all goes horribly wrong.

I wish I had enough faith to believe England will at least try to play like they did tonight when they go to Brazil. If they go with sensible expectations (i.e. anything beyond group stage is a bonus) and play with freedom, and the tempo and attacking intent they showed tonight, then they'll be worth watching and will have my support.

Tonight they played to their strengths and to some extent rode their luck. All credit to the manager and the players for that. It was far more than I was willing to expect.

Oh god, I'd forgotten about that.

They'll all be out.  The two flags on a car, the England shirts, the car stickers, all of that.

On the up side, it won't be for long.

Looking at the list of qualifiers now, and the face we're not a top seed so are guaranteed to be in a group with a big name nation...we're fecked.

There'll still be some bald-headed, England shirt wearing cúnt driving about in his uninsured, fúcked Cavalier with four flags on it in fúcking September.

And I bet there's some cúnt at a flea market in Romford selling the fúcking things already.
