garcon magnifique
You think people will have stopped laughing at Utd by summer? Of course they will. Football fans can't remember that long. By then they'll be creating burning effigies of Wayne Rooney having scape goated him for England's three defeats in the WC group stages...
Milo
Interesting that much of the noise on the internet seems to be coming from City and Newcastle fans. Obviously taking the opportunity to forget about their own woes for a day or so. It's the delicious irony, I'm enjoying It's the joke that keeps on giving. The club even had the audacity to thank Moyes for his integrity and honesty, while spending yesterday leaking info to the media suggesting he was sacked already. And we've achieved our target: mid-table mediocrity. Hell, we're only 2 places behind the long since deposed, self-proclaimed 'biggest club in the world' Edited April 22, 2014 by Milo
TP27
So let's stop talking about cars, cyclists, home, work, whatever. It is a major talking point when any manager leaves a football club, especially one of the size of United. To say we should be talking about something else is just missing the point entirely. (No offence!) None taken - I'm just trying to get my head around the fact that it appears that whoever takes this Managerial job on (Moyes included) is doomed from the off ('cos the "Brand" is too big with far too many conflicting influences). I also take on Board that half the supporters suggest that Moyes should have been given more time but at the other end of the spectrum, there's the suggestion that Moyes (as an individual) was never up to the task.................... For a "Global Brand" to make such a misjudgement seems implausible in the extreme - no ??? .

Waylander
I don't know where the "Klopp nailed on" has come from because that has never been my reading of it. He has always said he is committed to Dortmund. He was always someone a lot of fans seemed to say would be next in but I just cannot see where that comes from. Well for one - you (on FB at the time when Moyes was apparently 1 game away from the sack)... Edited April 22, 2014 by Waylander
Milo
Klopp. Quite apt. It reminds me of the clip-clop of a tired old horse as it makes its way to the knackers yard. Quite a good metaphor for Man U; I think they should sign him (on a 9 month contract, obviously) Edited April 22, 2014 by Milo
Twinspark
I don't think it's fan pressure that has brought about his downfall. In fact, the opposite is more likely to be true... He'd have gone earlier if the match going fans had turned at the games. (Just don't confuse the support in the ground with ow many truly felt). Seems he missed a vital performance measure, namely the Champions League qualification. Whilst some think that was an unfair demand... He signed up for it and knew full well what would happen if he failed. There are some players out there, though, who should be disciplined and fired for their behavior... Yes, Rio, I'm looking at you. Edited April 22, 2014 by Twinspark
garcon magnifique
There's a reason why some players, like Giggs, the Nevilles and Scholes will remain involved in the game and some, like Rio, won't. And it proves that 'football intelligence' as a player does not relate or transfer to any other kind of intelligence. If there was a Champs League qualification performance measure then I agree, fair or not it's what he signed up to. The thing is, which manager in their right mind would turn down that job just because they knew the board's minimum expectation might be difficult? That particular irony wasn't lost on me either. This is why I fear the board is now critically weakened and possibly divided. Things are happening which simply should not, in a way they should not. I have never been a fan of the Glazers, despite all those predictions of doom from those who thought they knew best not materialising (yet...), and although it's difficult to second guess what has been happening, one simple truth remains - replacing SAF and David Gill at the same time was suicidal. NewNiceMrMe
Ferdinand will be lucky to play for the club ever again. His tweets are unnecessary, unprofessional and he's tried to be a smartarse and failed miserably. As the day has gone on (I've spent 5.5 hours of listening to Radio 5 Live on a 300+ mile drive South) more people are starting to realise Woodward has got away very lightly here. I really don't like the guy and for him to be the one to sack Moyes seems even more unfair. I even heard a former footballer, earlier today, say that Moyes had told someone that he thought they'd got the Bale and Fabregas deals done - only for Woodward to say they'd fallen through. It sounds like Ronaldhino all over again and I hope it isn't true. If it is, it doesn't bode well for our transfer hopes in the summer. Giggs as manager makes the next few weeks interesting. There is no doubt he carries huge influence and players listen to him, but as part of the existing management team I wonder if he'll be able to make that much of an impact. Perhaps he'll let rip on the other players now. I do hope so. I've listened to all manner of reports today saying Moyes was indecisive and the players hated him taking playing sessions. So what? He's the boss. Get on with it. I think it is nailed on we'll end with Van Gaal. I can't say that fills me with optimism, but if it has to be him then so be it. I can't for the life of me see why Guardiola would want to come. He's got Bayern and he's got money too. Why bother? Yes he's best buddies with Sir Alex - but so was Moyes! If it was me, I'd probably look towards Conte or Simeone. What Conte has done at Juve is very impressive indeed. What Simeone has done is nothing short of remarkable. But he's Argentinian, so he can feck off.
garcon magnifique
Interesting comment from Roy Keane before the Chelsea match. As far as he's concerned the club have let Moyes down rather than the other way round.
Milo
Piss-taking aside for just for a bit.... I think Moyes has been treated very harshly by the club. He should've been given more time, however I can't help but wonder if his biggest mistake in all this was clearing the back-room staff out. He gave the club and its owners enough ammunition to load the gun, however they were the ones who pulled the trigger. And they've pulled it too soon, in my opinion. This season is a write off for the club. They should've have accepted that and backed their man in the summer. As it is, a new manager is going to be bank-rolled to the tune of what, £100m? £150m? More? And then the pressure is *really* on. Money does not guarantee success, as Chelsea and Man City have proved. And to a lesser degree, Spurs, Newcastle, Sunderland, QPR, Arsenal etc etc. The list is a long one. Whoever comes in will be under even more pressure than Moyes. If they're topping the league after 15 games, the Moyes era (or error, as it was called today) will be forgotten, all will be rosy. But if they're 4th or 5th, and falling behind the leading pack, then what? Sack another manager? Where do they go from there? Finally, a lot has been made of Ferguson's early years at the club and the lack of success they brought. A lot of noise has been about how they stuck by him and after 6 or 7 years, it paid dividends (the history books reflect that), But let's not kid ourselves. Had a 44 year old Alex Ferguson been starting his career at Man U in 2014, he would have never been given those 6 or 7 years. The game has changed immeasurably since 1986 and clubs, their owners/shareholders, and to a degree, their fans, demand near instant success or returns on their investment. And Moyes has just been a victim of those changes. Edited April 22, 2014 by Milo
NewNiceMrMe
Meanwhile.... David Luiz crocks John Terry. What on earth was he doing? Mourinho is destroying Simeone in the tactical battle tonight though. Atletico have been a shadow of their normal selves, but Mourinho has got Chelsea set up to frustrate and negate - and they're doing it brilliantly. Atletico look utterly devoid of ideas now. Let me save you time: WoWS - not bad, but not outstanding. Worth watching though. Hustle - overhyped, over-acted, drawn out and a complete disappointment. Watch Philomena instead, or The Family. CarMad
Are Utd going to suffer the same problems as other teams now? Every manager knows that if they don't get it right in year one they could be out, no Champions league then bye bye. For a team that created the whole ethos of choosing a manager and then letting him work over a long period of time to build a club they have a very short memory. I can see a few of the top managers saying thanks but no thanks if they think they will be on borrowed time from day one, surely they must see that. They might have given Moyes a 6 year contract but with the 1 year deliver or else clause then others are now going to be wary of the same poisoned chalice and the pressure the club undoubtably will bring. Talk of getting them back to the very top next year isn't right, they need to get the heart of the club wrapped around a good new manager than will be in for the long haul, I think they need to look at younger mangers not old stalwarts as well. Time will tell but I can see a bumpy road ahead personally.
Waylander
Maureen in park the bus shocker. That being said Athletico are hardly prolific in their crunch matches and can do the same. I suspect the return leg will be a similar affair and AM have the potential benefit of the Away goals rule
