I think it will. Both teams are crap, however our form at the moment is as bad as I can remember. They've got nothing to play for (not even pride as none of them have any) and Cardiff have everything to lose.

There's only 1 match for me this weekend, the 2nd leg of the Skrill Premier League on Sunday. C'mon the mighty Gateshead, I need another Wembley jolly.

I would be surprised if Sunderland get anything out of this weekend.  That said, I'm not sure they need to.  I have a sneaking feeling they're going to make that miraculous escape that very few would have forecast.

Cardiff are doomed.  Even you'll beat them.:roflmao:

It's going to be a big few days for Gateshead FC as you say.  I think the first leg is tonight?

I think it'll be beyond irony if Oster scores the goal that takes them up. :roflmao:

The funny thing is....they go into it as by far the strongest team on form.

2nd placed Cambridge have lost their last 5 matches

4th placed Grimsby have won 5 of their last 10, losing 2 and drawing 3

5th placed Halifax have won 6, drawn 2, lost 2

Gateshead are unbeaten in 10 and have won 7 of them.

The problem for Gateshead is the same it has always been and that'll be the test tonight.  They're not a good side away from home.  At home, they're incredibly strong.  I was listening to a discussion on 5 Live over the weekend just gone when they said the 2nd to 5th places had never been as close.  Only 5 points between them all.  Cambridge looked like runaway favourites until they realised Luton were uncatchable - and at that point they've gone into a dive.  If they pick themselves up from that for the play-off's then they'll be the team to beat.

So, the United U21s are in the U21 Premier League final vs Chelsea, after beating Liverpool in the semis. Some more promising kids coming through the system.

Just watched the Giggs press conference from this morning, too - once again, he's come over very well.

Does make me wonder if we should be looking towards a 'director of football' working on the management stuff, whilst having a 'first team coach' looking after training and match tactics, IYSWIM. Seems to be the modern development of a manager / assistant manager.

You've got to be joking, yes?

Explain to me how a player with no managerial experience whatsoever should take over the first team when you decried a manager with 10+ years of experience at the top level?

We've beaten Norwich.  Now you want him to take complete control of the first team?  Are you mad?

You also fail to understand the structure of United.  The club will not have a "Director of Football".  Not now, not ever.  I'm stunned you think the club would even go down that route.

You seem typical of a "one win" fan just because you like the interim manager and "Anyone but Moyes" brigade.

Louis Van Gaal will be appointed.  Accept it and support him.

As for the youth team, there is one stand-out star - Andreas Pereira.  The rest are okay but as anyone knows, the youth team of 92 was a unique one and it is very rare for more than 2-3 players to even end up playing for the full squad.

I tend to follow the wisdom of many of the pundits. There is certainly a trend for high profile players moving straight into high profile management positions. But there are two important factors. First, it's more likely to happen at a club with a Director of Football and First Team Coach set up, and second, it's less likely to work at a club that needs major restructuring, at least of the first team squad.

Van Gaal is the sensible choice. He has the clout to take on the overall management role, to motivate the best players at the club and to bring better players in. Ideally he will also be receptive to giving Giggs a key role - reserve manager would be my choice - and keeping some of the other 'Class of 92' together on the coaching staff, particularly Scholes (he'll never be a manager but he is exceptional with the youth).

We have to see how it all pans out over the remaining games.

Sometimes taking a gamble on someone who really knows the ethos of a club can pay dividends. Sometimes it goes wrong.

Van Gaal is the short term answer - and we know you're no fan of that approach!

Whatever happens, I see a lot of promise in Giggs - he's handling the media well, handling the players well and seems to have a clear plan when it comes to the football.

Best solution - Van Gaal with Giggs as assistant.

How is Van Gaal a short term solution?

He's 62.  Ferguson was 72 when he retired.

10 years would be a good spell from Van Gaal.

Just because Giggs is 40 doesn't make him the right long term solution!  I have never said I don't think Giggs has potential, of course he does.  Maybe in 10 years time.

I firmly believe he needs to leave the club and get top flight experience elsewhere first though.

I see Van Gaal being at the club four or five years, but that's plenty of time to do what he needs to do.

Ordinarily I would agree Giggs should go and manage elsewhere, but more and more these days the best young managers emerge from coaching positions at the big clubs rather than successfully managing smaller clubs. Both routes have their merits, neither guarantee success.

I think he made some bad calls today. Some which completely mystify me. I'll put that down to inexperience.

Sunderland have been remarkable over the last few weeks, though - that's 10 points from the last 4 games - including wins away at Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford and a draw at the Wastelands. Unbelievable.

The silver lining - definitely no Thursday Night Cup.
