NewNiceMrMe
Why is MU in the Premiership? All these things are relevant and justified questions! Daz, feck off.

NewNiceMrMe
This I agree with and that's what is so frustrating. The days of Viera and Petit bossing midfield with a raft of highly talented footballers surrounding them. These days the Aresnal players still have talent in abundance, but they are so bloody fragile! They are missing that drive, heart, passion that the invincibles had and Wenger seems to be doing little to rectify this. See, I have a few issues with this type of view but it is not because I don't see what you mean - it is something else: Keown was raving about Wenger before kick-off. He played down Monaco something chronic. However, this is a team that had only conceded 1 goal in qualifying (I know they only scored 4, but they topped their group too). They have won their last 4 away games in the French league too. They were wound up by the English press saying Arsenal had got the easy game. If they listened to Keown pre-match, anyone would think it was a drubbing of at least 4-0 or 5-0 to come. If they had then continued to listen to him in the first 15-20 minutes, they'd have got even more wound up. I think it was a peerless display of Champions League football from an away team. Monaco were outstanding. Yes, Arsenal were crap, but Monaco were top drawer and the way Berbatov hammered that goal in was sublime. I have said many times on here that Wenger can't be getting the blame one week and being touted as the Messiah the next. He takes some horrendous abuse on Twitter and yet Arsenal fans have been singing his praises for weeks now - and then this. I have had a pop at LVG recently because I think his selection has been woeful. I am very concerned about what he is doing, but I have to believe he knows a lot more about the game than any other Man United supporter and myself - because he does. So, I trust him (though I'll admit I am a lot more worried right now than I ever was last year). But Wenger had a side out there last night that should have won. Not a rout, but they should have won. I can't see what he did wrong. Because of that, and their recent form has been excellent, why is it now his fault for not making more signings in January? I will go back to what I have always said about Sanchez (Chri5 will tell you I said this last August) - he plays half a season. It is why Barca got rid. Ozil needs a hot iron to the head. His performances have been dire for the money you paid (I'd have him on a train to Siberia with Di Maria). Giroud is hot and cold. Welbeck - well, what did I say last August too? There is a reason United sold him! As with my criticism of United last year, I think this is the players. I think Wenger made mistakes in not addressing the striker position, and yes you do seem to need someone who can kick players off the pitch in midfield (you can have Fellaini if you want?), but last night was all about the players just not doing what he'd told them to do. For 15-20 minutes they were very good. Then....they did what they do best - bottled it. That can't be down to him. Monaco are through. Arsenal are out. It is finished. That Monaco outfit could keep Messi quiet all night, never mind Arsenal. They just won't score like they did against you. However, don't be surprised if you're not the last side they dump out of the competition. I have a feeling that we might see them in the semi-finals if they avoid Chelsea (who are far too well drilled to go out to them), Barca or Real. I still think Chelsea might win this. garcon magnifique
The English Premier League. Richest League in the world. But still hopeless compared to our poor European cousins. One English team in the last 8 of the Champions League. Oh but our league has more strength in depth they say. Really? One English team in the last 16 of the Europa Cup. Utter shyte. garcon magnifique
And another thing. The Oldham manager job becomes available and the media are falling over themselves to claim some kind of exclusive that Paul Scholes is a shoe in. Grow up you bunch of hopelessly predictable imbeciles.
Luke
Do our clubs take the Europa cup seriously though? Liverpool and Spurs didn't have full strength sides out last night. Liverpool are more interested in getting in the top 4 and a big Prem game Sunday and Tottenham have the cup final. Prem sides take the Champions League seriously though. City drew Barcelona - a tough, tough draw for anyone. Arsenal are the let-down, again. However, their performance speaks more of them than it does the Premier League. Liverpool were always going to struggle. First season back in the CL for centuries (or thereabouts) and they're just not a top side. Chelsea are going to be tough to beat - will it be a failure of the Premier League if they make the semi's or the final? I don't think so. The Europa Cup is completely irrelevant. Nobody wants to be in it and nobody cares. I read nothing into that. I really don't think we can read a lot into it right now.
Scotty
£40m a year for a shirt deal!?! That's a lot of tyres! Then again I wonder if it's bigger margin business than Chevrolet for ManU Edited February 27, 2015 by Scotty
NewNiceMrMe
Pah, that's a full £7m a year less than the Chevrolet deal. Paupers.

NewNiceMrMe
It is an excellent deal for Chelsea. It won't be the last either. There will no doubt be lots of other things to sponsor in the same way United do it. The training kits, the training ground, the watch deals, the car deals, the 'official mobile phone provider' deals....they're all mega money. I recall reading about the Manchester United Mastercard deal with MBNA. They are reputed to have paid £2m a year to get the 'official club credit card' deal and the club get a kick back on sign ups too. That has been running for over 15 years now and is said to make both MBNA and United a very large amount of money every year.
cruiser647
Do people really sign up for a credit card because it has Manchester United on the front? (or back) or any team for that matter?

M8CKN
I think that about most sponsorship. I've never bought a brand of tyres/insurance/watch etc as they're on a footy shirt.

You might not have done, but most sports sponsorship is all about brand awareness and visibility. These companies don't spend millions because it doesn't work. They do it because it does.

Andrew
From time to time I watch a game. I watched a bit of last night and it confirmed to me that chavball is still not a game for me. I liked the ref's stance on diving but if it had been me anyone in my face would have been off. Why is it acceptable to harangue the referee? Make it a sending off offence and sorted. Calm Chris
Man Utd get 10 points a season via abusing the ref, it didn't work for them last night. There was a lot of post match analysis by Man Utd supporters in the normal blind style shouting about how an Arsenal player should be red carded. As always they didn't see Side show Bob kick the crap out of the Arsenal mid field for the majority of the match, and (obviously) the sending off of of a Man Utd player was simply an outrageous injustice.
