Typical Fergie fortune.  Buying Van Persie was a huge gamble because of his injury record.  He got away with it for a season - a season in which VP's goals were the difference.  Now the gamble comes back to bite and Fergie's gone!

A chance for Rooney to buck his usual trend and actually perform like a world class player after Christmas too for once.

The officials weren't brilliant but it takes a lot for me to say City played anyone off the pitch - but they did yesterday.

How any Arsenal fan thinks they did well yesterday is beyond me.

Wenger not being concerned about the defeat would bother me too.

I still think Arsenal could make a difference in their season but only IF they are prepared to buy a quality striker in January.

I just cannot see beyond City right now.  They're all staying fit, all playing well and eventually they're going to sort out the away form.  When they do they'll take the title easily.  Mourinho is clearly rebuilding, Arsenal don't have the squad or spine they need, Liverpool are out of position and will fall away.

Everton are interesting though.  They are playing some superb football.

United just have to get the 4th spot if possible although I'll admit RVP being out isn't going to help over the next month.

A year out of the Champions League is do-able.  If it has to happen, then so be it.  I'm not one of the brigade who classes it as failure - I simply see it as something we might have to go through in order for Moyes to build the club around his approach and get the team that he wants.  I know we'll struggle to attract some of the players SAF could, but I remain confident in the medium to long term.

Sometimes you need to feel a little pain in order to enjoy the highs of success.  Otherwise it just becomes the norm and we end up with the hoards of glory supporters we clearly seem to have at present in some quarters.

I think you're hugely under-estimating the impact dropping out of the top 4 can have - once you're out of the club, it's hard to get back into it - especially when 2 of the 4 places are taken by teams being bankrolled by largely unlimited funding. (And fair play will do sod all to change this).

It's a worrying position right now - the Glazers aren't going to bankroll major changes to the squad, so we'll be operating on a budget - that was always said to be Moyes's strength, but Martinez is making it look like he was under-achieving with the resources at hand at Everton.

I do worry when I see fans accepting our dropping out of the top 4 - this squad should be odds-on for a top 4 finish even with a monkey at the helm.

I don't see any connection between what Moyes did at Everton and what Martinez is doing right now.

You seem to be conveniently forgetting that Martinez has the benefit of players that Moyes didn't.

He has brought in...

Romelu Lukaku

Gareth Barry

Gerard Deulofleu (a superb player)

Joel Robles

Antolin Alcaraz

Aroune Kone

He also has the benefit of a fit Oviedo, a player everyone knew was quality in the first place.

It isn't the same team and before you say it is down to Martinez choosing those players - Moyes had started the negotiations for Deulofleu, Robles and Barry.
