NewNiceMrMe
Forcing Wengers hand on Strikers you would hope..... See, I find that interesting. Who on earth is there to sign? Nobody. Absolutely nobody. I back Moyes 100% when he says none of the clubs targets are available - because no decent strikers are going to be going anywhere in a January transfer window unless you have your eyes poked out on the price. Even if a club does decides to cash in on a quality player, there is a strong chance they'll be Champions League tied, so you can't use them in the one competition you'd really like to (yes I know you need them in the League too). United need to sign a midfielder and a defender. However, I won't be at all bothered if we don't. I would much rather have a terrible season and see the squad strengthened properly in the summer than have our pockets emptied on second rate crap in the winter. I think Wenger is going to buy a striker anyway, I just cannot for the life of me see it meeting the expectations of the typically optimistic Arsenal fan nowadays - because there is nobody decent out there! garcon magnifique
I struggle to understand the approach of some managers when it comes to strikers. United fans complain about the quality of their options but when you really look at it only City have better 3rd and 4th choice strikers.
NewNiceMrMe
Indeed. We badly need RVP back though. Rooney too, come to think of it. We don't need goalscorers, we need people to feed them the ball. However, it is the Arsenal position I find most interesting. Going well, but clearly lacking what it needs to be a serious title contender. They cannot win it as they stand now. So who does he buy? Does he panic and buy a striker now, or does he do the sensible thing and wait until summer when, on the back of a good campaign this season, he will find it easier to attract a striker at a better price - and they won't be cup tied. I think he's going to panic buy, I really do.
m4ttm4son
You don't follow Arsenal much do you? Wenger loves a thin squad. He would've happily sailed to the end of the season on the squad we had and I dare say he still might try to now. Last winter Gibbs was out and he brought forward the purchase the Monreal that was earmarked for the summer. Not bad for a "panic" buy. I hope he'll do something similar this year. Whatever target he has lined up for the summer, just bung another £5m on the price tag and get it done now. An out of the question Arsenal option, but Falcao might move this month. His transfer to Monaco was more about money that football.

I think he's going to panic buy, I really do. I honestly think most top players will wait until they see where Utd finish before signing. They'll probably not sign anyone in January because they're all tied anyway but also because it could be an embarrassment if no one actually wants to go yet. They'd be better pushing for top 4 then sign later.

NewNiceMrMe
United's ideal defensive signing would be Luke Shaw of Southampton. Easily the brighest young defender in England, if not Europe. I just fear the likes of City or Chelsea will steamroller that one. United are known to have made contact about him but been rebuffed. The Telegraph seem to suggest that Southampton would accept £25m for him. I can't see us spending that in January on him but I wouldn't be surprised to see a £15m bid go in to test the water. Coentrao is being mentioned again and that might happen, but he's cup tied so it would be a league purchase only. Nonetheless, I think it'd be a reasonable one. Not brilliant, but a proven experienced defender. I can't see Leighton Baines joining. We should have signed him in the summer instead of Fellaini and I think any prospect of him coming to Old Trafford is limited now. Kyle Walker is being touted as a right back option. That's interesting because it might indicate Moyes is losing faith in Rafael. I'd be disappointed in that. He needs to sort his temper out but he is a superb attacking option and I don't want to see him replaced. Then we have the midfield position. Ander Herrera (he of the 'ghost agents' fame) is back on the agenda and I'd like to see that happen. But, after the mess of the last day of the summer transfer window I'll not believe he is signed until I see him sat at a table next to Moyes in a press conference. There were reports in Spain and the English press yesterday that United had scouts at the match in Spain watching Herrera and Diego Costa, so maybe something will happen. When? God only knows. Lallana is the other. A double Southampton swoop? I would quite like that one. More English players is never a bad thing because you don't know what UEFA/FIFA will do on the foreign player rule in the future, but I'm not sure if he is creative enough for what we need. If I was asked what I'd like to see in January it would be quite simple. 1 - Luke Shaw 2 - Ander Herrara 3 - Adam Lallana In that order. We can't miss out on Luke Shaw or we'll regret it, I'm sure of that. I also think the midfield will benefit from two players. If we were to get Herrara and Lallana, we'd have good tactical options. We'll probably sign nobody.
m4ttm4son
I REALLY don't think Southampton will sell anybody. A year ago, you could say that Luke Shaw would've forced a move to a club like ManU, but that lustre isn't there right now. Southampton are also playing well so no need to jump ship at all. I agree that he and Lallana are the biggest targets they have to protect, though. Coentrao was rumoured to be going to Spurs last summer, so his people could be trying to get him out. Wouldn't be surprised if he came to the Prem. Even if you keep on with Rafael, surely you need another RB? Playing Smalling or Jones there is just a make-do, isn't it? Also, Di Maria is still reportedly "unsettled" and had a hissy fit yesterday. I wouldn't mind Arsenal getting in on that. A proper winger would be nice. Waylander
Pah. Check you with your fancy-dan foreign names. You need proper British talent if you want to win the league - splashing out on the likes of Powerhouse Carrol, WIng Wizard Downing and General Adam is the way to go.... I also think Man U in particular should not get bogged down worrying about being cup-tied in Europe as the players are needed to bulk the squad/team going forward and they can rotate the current players for the CL games. Let's see if our pursuit of Salah comes off (both as a transfer and as a player who actually adds anything)
