Tipex
I'd rather we weren't there. Support the team instead of criticising, you aren't the kind of fan we want, why don't you support someone else, glory hunter, etc etc. Hypocritical? garcon magnifique
Only hypocritical if it came from an England fan. It's interesting when you look at the banners at England games. Very few are from top flight clubs. I've been trying to logicalise (that's definitely a word) my position on this. I want to support England but ultimately I find myself wanting the team to fail because I want the FA to fail, because the FA are ultimately responsible for the destruction of the English game. We've now reached the point where the top division is openly at odds with the interests of the national team.
NewNiceMrMe
As Garcon said, this goes well beyond wanting England to win. I will be supporting England tonight, twitching when a chance arises, shouting "Yes!" when a goal is scored and so on. I'll do it because it is my instinctive reaction despite the fact I think we're an absolutely awful international side. I also fear us drawing a Group of Death in which we will be absolutely humiliated by a team like Spain or Germany, or perhaps even Brazil. However, I would, in reality, enjoy the world cup finals much more if we weren't there. I'm afraid we playing boring, uninspired and technically backwards football. That is not entertainment. International football is very different to domestic club support. I feel no real connection with the national team anymore because of years of abject performances and a very obvious lack of commitment when it matters. m4ttm4son
That's because the top division is run by the Premier League (Sky), not the FA.

garcon magnifique
It's the FA Premier League is it not? The FA were instrumental in setting it up and have been shamelessly chasing the cash it generates ever since. As far as the FA are concerned, the lower league and amateur game ceased to exist in 1992.
NewNiceMrMe
Talking of the lower leagues, a few on here know I support my local Northern League side with a lot of enthusiasm. I do it because I can take our youngest to a match with a crowd of between 400-700, sometimes 1,000 if it is a cup tie (which we've had a lot of over the last 4 years) and know she is unlikely to hear much abuse or swearing. But, Garcon is right. The FA have completely deserted the leagues that, very often, develop a lot of young local talent. They are leaving clubs to go out of business in their droves, yet they spend millions upon millions on a national team that constantly fails to deliver. My team broke records in winning the FA Vase, at Wembley, 3 years running. It is unheard of at this level and was an incredible feat (and we're now crap by the way, but it's still brilliant fun to watch). They received the grand total of £25,000 in prize money each time they won it. That sounds a lot on the face of it - but think about it. They went through 9 rounds to get to the final, took tens of thousands of fans to Wembley (earning the FA a fortune) and the team received £25,000. The winners of the FA Cup receive £1.8 million. If you want to develop youth football - invest in the lower leagues. A lot of these clubs (mine included) have multiple boys teams. They haven't got any money - even with all the success we've had. garcon magnifique
In contrast, have a guess how much the WORST Premier League team will receive in prize money this season. Their prize for coming last. (Clue - it's enough to ensure the three relegated teams will be by far the richest teams in the Championship the following season.) NewNiceMrMe
I think the best way of summing it up is that in the last game of the season Newcastle lost to Arsenal and slipped from 13th to 16th place. That cost them £2.26 million. One defeat cost them 90x more than my local club won for winning an FA Trophy. m4ttm4son
Yet, contrast the prize for winning the FA Cup, with a spot in the Champions League. It's a difference of ~£28.2m THAT's why sometimes a bit of silverware is overlooked by some clubs

Waylander
Or critising another ManU fan for suggesting the same because he doesn't like the new manager (wanders away whistling innocently....)
NewNiceMrMe
It is entirely different. One has been going on for decades - the national team debacle. The other is referencing a guy in a job for 8-9 games! But you knew that anyway....

garcon magnifique
A club is not defined by whoever currently owns (or manages) them. The England national team on the other hand is and forever will be defined by the FA. The FA is England football. I'm not saying I want England to fail because of certain individuals. I'm saying I do because of the FA. No discrimination here. They are all cúnts.

m4ttm4son
Oh. I just hate most of the players that put the England shirt on and can't abide them doing well at anything or being worthy of support from me. In a few years, that may change though. Most of that "entitled" old guard will be gone.

billy2shots
I agree with garcon and MrMe in some ways but i'm afraid you have to support the English team regardless of what is going on behind the scenes. I am in no way comparing the two but I think of it in the same way I support our troops when they are sent into some hell hold. I can disagree strongly with why they are there and pick holes in the decision process etc etc but I will forever support those who are actually there. The players picked to play for their country have zero say in the behind the scenes ballsh1t and should be supported accordingly.

I do understand that, and I would never ever criticise anyone for wholeheartedly supporting their team. I do find it a bit sad though when 'England' fans allow their club tribalism to cloud their view of England players. Starting with those who continually criticised Beckham. Blinkered ABU cúnts, every single one of them.
m4ttm4son
Exactly, they're all on their way out By the time the World Cup comes round it'll be their last Hurrah (whoever's left) and then they'll pass the baton on to a few players I haven't thought up irrational negativity towards
