Jmholdsworth
Hi, Has anyone had a fix for this? Same problem on my 2008 A4 Cab 2.0tdi. This is what I've changed so far: Started with EGR cooler going. This was replaced. Water pump replaced Thermostat replaced Head gasket replaced EGR cooler replaced AGAIN Now we've coolant flushing around the pipes / cooling system but still the problem exists. It comes hot for a minute then gets much cooler, sometime cold sometimes just cooler. Please please please, can someone help. It's costing me a fortune so far!! Thanking you in advance. cruiser647
Hey! Does the car get up to temperature at all? Can you check the temperature difference (by feel) of the top and bottom pipes on the radiators? Have all air bubbles been removed from the coolant system? Car starts OK at all times?
Jmholdsworth
Hi, Thank you so much Cruiser647 for replying! Yes the car gets up to temperature fine. The top pipe is hot, but the bottom pipe going into the Radiator is either luke warm or cold. I gather from speaking to mechanic friends that bottom pipe should be hot also, but it's not! The coolant has been flushed and had a vacuum pump / machine run through. That was done by a VW garage (cheaper than Audi). Car starts first time, every time, no issues. I'm a little wiery about driving it. If I put my 'logical' head on, the first issue was the EGR cooler going, that was replaced, then 3-4 weeks later the Head Gasket went - that was replaced, then 1-2 weeks later again the EGR cooler went so was replaced again. In the middle of all this, I've never had hot air coming through so replaced the water pump and tharmastat to see if it would help. The logical part of me thinks there's an underlying problem that caused the EGR to go, then the head gasket, then the EGR again... and I'm worried if I drive it, the head gasket will go again and then the EGR etc... What do you think?
cruiser647
With all those issues, it sounds like the top of the engine is getting very hot. Bottom of the engine isn't. What's the coolant bottom temperature like? Do the engine fans come on at all? When the air con comes on, does the air con fan in the engine bay come on? I would wait for the engine to get hot, then open the coolant cap (VERY carefully!!!). It should be under lots of pressure, so any potential blockages should get moved along? Not sure if this is pukka advice or not, but sounds like a blockage somewhere?
Jmholdsworth
Hi, The engine does feel hotter than normal when I open the bonnect and did mention that to my mechanic but he just brushed my comment off and said all engines get hot! The engine fans don't come on, no. the coolant bottom temperature? How do I test this? When we emptied the coolant from the bottom pipe when flushing it, it came out extremely hot. The Air con fan in the engine bay. Sorry I don't know where this is. My mechanic has been saying it's a blockage all along, but he said the coolant flush should resolve this. After a fairly long drive with the heaters off, we slowly opened the coolant lid, the fluid was extremely hot and bubbling over and took a while to actually open the lid without being scalded, but again, heathers are no better. Do you think it will damage the engine if I continue to drive the car? Or could this have caused BOTH EGR's to fault and the head gasket to go? I'm trying not to drive it so much but it's becoming a massive inconvenience with work. Cheers, J
cruiser647
The top of it getting hot will defo be the cause of the damaged bits. Sitting there being boiled to death! When the thermostat was changed, I presume it was for a new one and that the water pump impellers are OK? Did he check the drive of the water pump? Oh, and yes, I wouldn't drive it much! Golfedd
Jmholdsworth - I'm presuming you mean there is no hot air coming from the air vents in the car? despite having it turned up to HIGH? This is a common issue with the Audi B6, B7 and maybe B8 (not sure on the B8).So the first thing to check is the heater/blower control flaps and the motors. I had hot air ONLY on the passenger side as the control arm for the passenger side has snapped off have a look at the below pictures you'll see what I mean. you need to remove the glovebox (very easy to do) and the drivers side trim also easy to do HERE'S A GUIDE you don't need some of the fancy tools that guy used. Sometimes the motors get old and die and there for wont change from cold to hot here you can see my passenger motor was MISSING! (2nd hand car) I got a motor of eBay for £
