Moving from an Audi A4 to BMW 520D - one guy's experience

On the later 5 series the key doesn't need to be incerted into anything as standard. Is yours an E60? if so then it does need to inserted in the F10/11 then you don't.

 

In the later 2012/13 cars they have no added stop start, it wasn't in any BMW 5 series before that date. +++

I know cars are getting more complicated but after reading a couple of different threads I thought I was on a gardening forum with a couple of car threads.

Come on lads! This IS a car forum and we have people pressing their starter buttons to activate stop start, people walking away from their cars with radio still blaring out, owners who can't control their wipers or set their trips.

I'm hanging my head in shame.

Now can someone tell me how to keep these slugs from destroying my vege patch.

I've got a lawn puncturing machine thingy, I saw it sat outside a charity shop and they said I could take it because they weren't allowed to sell it, obviously I made a donation.

It's like one of those old fashioned push along mowers, only with spikes that spring up!

And I don't know what scarifying is but it sounds harsh!

Finally got round to transferring all the crud ooops sorry vitally important items from the Audi to the bm (via multiple bags in the study).

pleasing that everything previously cluttering the boot fits in the space flt the spare tyre (hidden from view) including the new sack with snow socks.

everything in all the various door compartments, draws etc etc have been tucked away with nothing visible and cluttered.

nice advantage of a bigger car.

One I work out how to take the phone cradle out of the armrest I will have useful space there (there is currently no cradle for the Lumia).

Also getting more used to driving the things +++

Just catching up on this and reading that Waylander thought the Stop-Start feature on his car was really crap and no matter what he did, it just wouldn't cut in when he wanted it to.  Another classic thread. :roflmao:

 

For what it is worth, and god knows I have tried again, the stop-start (or lack of it in the E60) is something I'd happily give you if I could.  It's crap.  I switch it off as soon as I get in the car because I maintain it is dangerous. 

 

I left it on a few weeks ago, on a 350+ mile round trip, thinking I should really give it another go.  For most of the trip is was fine.  On the way home I'd forgotten all about it.  That was until I sat at a roundabout waiting to sprint into the traffic flow (incredibly busy).  A space appeared, off I went...except I didn't.  Because the engine cut out just as I went to pull out.  It cuts back in very quickly, but that moment of hesitation and loss of movement is enough to miss a chance or put you in danger in my opinion. 

 

It's rare, and yes you can apply pressure, move the wheel etc to keep the engine going - but I just want to drive.  I don't want to have to think of brake pressure or whether the engine is going to cut out and what I'll do to stop it.  I just want to get where I'm going without having to think about that. 

 

To be honest, my biggest frustration is that the default setting is for Stop-Start to be enabled.  I'd much rather it was off and you had to enable it by hitting the button.

Now I know you were teasing and I note what else you said. I would also have turned it off once I "knew" it was there and functioning.

To be fair my motive was ensuring there was no fault in the car/engine precluding a function iy should have had from working properly as in that case I would get the dealer to stump up for it.

I even asked a dealer who said the car should have it and it was likely due to driving style so I feel somewhat vindicated.

what we have seen from these threads is that there are many options that depend on the car model even when they are not too far apart in age, or similar things work very differently depending on option x or y and so friends being helpful about a feature in theirs might not translate across to another similar car +++

I've missed most of this thread, which is a shame. The temp control wheel thing I think is very thoughtful. If I want the car at 22 degrees but don't want my face melted as the car tries to get it to 22 as quickly as possible, I adjust the little wheel. I think it is very good and so simple too.

 

I'd love to be bothered about upgrading my 08 3 series to the latest iDrive - but each time I want to have the software updated, or BMW want me to, I'd have to take all the new kit out and put the old stuff back in. Which is a mighty faff - especially for 32 miles a year ...

 

I'm dead impressed with the Beemer - it is such a nice car really well built and IMO a much nicer place to be than the VAG products.

stuck an address into the satnav. On the way it decided to reroute me based on traffic news it had received.

Now I don't have any connected services active so I can only assume this was based on info from the Radio (if so very clever - but I doubt it).

Either way it was right as there was a big crash which closed the motorway I was about to join. +++

I'd have thought you had that in the Audi?

 

They've replaced TMC with RTTI now and it's very good, but most portable SatNav systems still use TMC anyway and for me the only real difference is it seems much more accurate in terms of delay times, and it is very timely information (whereas TMC might tell you there's a delay when it has been cleared for a good while).

I didn't have Satnav in the Audi.

Agreed though the Nav was still indicating a problem (and the radios were reporting it) but it was cleared by the time I reached the junction in question

Any idea why TMC is slow to update but RTTI is fast? Aren't they're both just ways of distributing the data so I don't get why one would send old info and one current?

TMC tends to only be on major routes that have the sensors I think so large sections of motorway sometimes won't pick things up. 

 

RTTI uses TMC as well as GSM sources so mobiles moving along a road for example so it doesn't matter if its a minor or a major road the sat-nav might still show the issue and I presume its update more frequently. Its a lot better than TMC, minor roads can show queues up to roundabouts for instance and you can even see traffic slowing down as they reach a holdup via changing colours.
