shao_khan
I'd honestly go and look at a few and see what you like the look of best. My Dad loves his Panasonic, and I think there is a good degree of personal opinion in TVs. OUR 3D gets used for films from time to time, but not a huge amount. patently
Mrs P wants a new TV for Christmas... thank you all for discussing it in advance so that I don't have to wait for the advice So the consensus is: Samsung or LG John Lewis or Richer Sounds, if JL then remember the pricematch 3D probably a gimmick Smart TV probably worth it Make sure it has WiFi Have a good long look at the actual pictures on the actual things and get the one you like the best
eldavo69
You'd be better off connecting the tv via network cable if possible rather than wifi. I moved our router to under the tv stand so I could plug the xbox, sky box and tv straight in.
patently
Router is a loooong way away. I'll try and link them via a powerline adaptor but want the Wifi there as a backup
garcon magnifique
Before you buy that LG tv, you might want to read these... http://doctorbeet.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/lg-smart-tvs-logging-usb-filenames-and.html http://www.informationweek.com/security/compliance/lg-admits-smart-tvs-spied-on-users/d/d-id/1112755 and ask yourself whether you believe LG about their 'firmware upgrade'.
patently
Ouch. Now, does one opt for Samsung on the basis that this hasn't been found in their TVs, or LG on the basis that they've been shamed into stopping whereas everyone else is probably carrying on merrily?
garcon magnifique
That's a tricky one. First, I don't entirely believe LG have stopped. Second, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they're all at it.
Waylander
probably the latter on that basis alone. btw when viewing TVs make sure they have identical feeds. If there is a Indie shop near you, you can always ask them to put side by side for a comparison too with the same source.
patently
42" Sony ordered from John Lewis. Stopped off there on the way home and decided to go for 42 rather than 40 & felt the Sony was the best offer at that size. Thanks for all the help
billy2shots
Spent the day researching TV's, turn on TSN and see this thread lol. This is the one I am going for http://www.johnlewis.com/samsung-ue40f7000-led-hd-1080p-3d-smart-tv-40-with-freeview-freesat-hd-and-voice-motion-control-with-2x-3d-glasses/p430426

Thanks! I might run Wireshark over the weekend and see if my turning off the option has worked. I did get a firmware upgrade a few days ago so maybe it's done. patently
Nope, but tacking a BluRay player onto the order was silly money so I'm picking that up on Sunday.

The TV is to replace a 3 year old high spec Panni plasma and I couldn't get near the quality until you look look at the 7000 and 8000 series of Samsungs. After a long bitter battle with John Lewis they have decided to offer me £800 towards a new TV rather than go to court. That figure is the cost of my TV when new minus 10% each year for the 3 1/2 years I have had it. Unfortunately £800 would see me left with a lesser TV set so I am going to bung £200 towards it and get a decent one. The mrs family live in Turkey so she uses Sype a lot. The 7000 series has a camera so she can use skype from the tv leaving the computer free for me which is a bonus
patently
Ah, yes I forgot about that. Sounds a good plan in that case
NewNiceMrMe
Our main TV is a Samsung 3D TV. We've used the 3D functionality with the glasses a huge amount. Actually that's a lie. We've used them three times. The last time was over a year ago. Total waste of money. The TV itself is stunning though and I've nothing but praise for Samsung TV's. Chick
WE've got the Samsung UE55F8500 in the living room, picture is very very good and the "smart" element is excellent. Kids have the 39" version in their snug room - very pleased with them

scooby_simon
Samsung Smart 40 inch turned up last week. Plus sound bar. Proper clever bit of kit. Picture is fantastic. Just got to get the Wii working with it now!
garcon magnifique
I like the look of these sound bars. Are they as good as a cheapo multi speaker cinema sound set up?
Scotty
I assumed Plex worked on them all Smart TVs Plex, DLNA, Miracast/WiDi, Apps such as Youtube, iPlayer, etc I guess it depends where you go in each manufacturers range on how fully featured they are. Does anyone do a top end TV (i.e. best tech and features) but without 3D? Lots of people say it's a gimmick but how do you buy without. If it doesn't have 3D then it seems it won't have a lot else too.
