cruiser647
Yeah, yeah I know - blatant copy of a link to the Autocar mag site, but what a list to choose from!!! http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motoring/vote-your-greatest-british-car-1960s Best is a bad word to use here - best at what? Sound? Prestige? Performance? Space? pfft! Anyway, which one would you choose? Just 1, none of this 'if I had space..' or 'if it was a hot weekend.....' or 'If I wanted to scare the neighbours.......' Just 1!! Although you can have runners up. For me - it would have to be the Jensen FF. Just. Followed by the (dirty) Aston then the Rover P5B then the TR5.
NewNiceMrMe
Might be a bit left of centre but I'm going to go for the Rover P5B. My father had a Rover 100. Blue/Grey two-tone with blue leather and the largest plastic and chrome steering wheel you could imagine. It was a fantastic car that he had throughout my childhood. It had the registration mark SJT 181. I have checked the plate numerous times and it isn't assigned to any vehicle so I've always wondered what happened to it. I know he scrapped the car eventually after about 12 years of ownership - and the plate went with it but I would have thought the scrapyard might have spotted the plate and sold it. garcon magnifique
I wouldn't mind a P5B as a weekender. Lovely car. As for my choice from that list, I'm a bit torn. E-Type Lightweight I think, for pure top drawer motorsport heritage.
patently
Sentimentality wins, for me. There's only one car on that list that I used to see regularly, and which I used to look at and really, really want. That was before I knew anything about cars* so before I knew how awful they were, but as Hannibal Lecter says - we covet what we see around us. MGBGT, then *i.e., last week
Calm Chris
Lotus Cortina for me please. Due to sentiment since dad had two and liked to wake us up on the journey in to school each day
Tipex
GT40 for me, no question. Honourable mention for the Lotus Cortina and Gordon Keeble though.
Mook
Of everything on that list, it has to be the GT40. Conquered and dominated when it was launched and now mega-rare and worth a mint
garcon magnifique
Funnily enough it was between the lightweight E-Type, Lotus Cortina and GT40 for me. All really down to motorsport heritage. The GT40 was probably the greatest outright motorsport achievement of the three.
patently
Yes, I'd love the GT40, or the DB5, or the E-type, but it's never going to happen, is it? Lust after that which is available, and you're more likely to end up happy
garcon magnifique
I don't think there's any on the list I'd actually be unhappy with. Even the Toledo has a certain retro charm. As a realistic prospect the P5B would be hard to beat.
Torino101
The others even the two Astons aren't even in the running for me compared to the GT40. Possibly my favourite car ever.
NewNiceMrMe
I wouldn't mind a P5B as a weekender. Lovely car. After that he bought a Rover P6 3500 V8 S (High compression engine). I've just checked the plate of it. L reg. It is still out there! I might try to track the owner of that down. I would seriously consider making him an offer on that car. That's the only real way of knowing if it's still out there, when I reg check cars I know have been scrapped many years ago, they still show up on some reg check sites. Such as my dads old Alfa GTV6, that was scrapped in the 80's but still shows up.

Tipex
Most likely non-transferable though.
Mook
Most likely non-transferable though. I guess you wouldn't know 'til you tried. If it's on the original plate, you can - I did that on my VW split screen van and one of my 62 Bugs.
Tipex
It's a pretty good likelihood that it's non transferable. I would imagine it was quite some time ago when you transferred those plates, since then, the DVLA has cottoned on to the fact people were making money buying old scrappers (often only buying the V5 and not actually having the car itself) and selling the plate. So they changed the rules, if a cars registration number is it's original issue, it's non transferable. You can only transfer plates that have already been transferred at some point, or that you bought from the DVLA or have the retention certificate for. Mook
When did this ruling come in?
Tipex
A few years back now, when they started auctioning off the plates. It means anything with an old/interesting plate that gets scrapped, they keep the number and can then sell them at a later date.
