New Laptop - MBP or Dell XPS?

Because if you want to upgrade to something new in 3 years time; one will mean you need to start again and its worth nothing, whilst the other still retains a significant amount of its value and you won't need to add much money at all to get back into the same machine.

There is a huge market for second hand Apple machines. +++

Who on earth buys second hand laptops / desktops?? How relavent is resale value?

it's incredibly relevant in the Apple world. I usually sell mine on when there's a significant upgrade (usually annually) recouping circa 80% of the original price. Try that with your Dell :P

May have a Retina 13" unit going very soon.

Mac, For 'Bang for Buck' these days where is the sweet spot in 4th gen processors? I3, I5 or I7??

All are perfectly capable of running everyday tasks, but if you wanted to add in a bit gaming (with a dedicated GPU), or some heavier multitasking are the I3's still plenty fast enough???

I have a 2.4ghz Quad Core i7 with 16gb of RAM and the retina screen (15").

However, forget the processor.  I think the only people that get the real benefit of the i7's are the likes of Mac running intensive processes.

Instead, if anyone is looking to a MBP I'd recommend one thing above everything else - the SSD.

I specced a 256gb SSD and the machine is like a rocket.  Nothing seems to 'load'.  It just happens.  Immediately.

It's fair to say that when coupled with the i7 and 16gb of RAM it is a beast of a thing, but the reality is I don't think the processor makes much difference in the type of day to day stuff I do.  The 16gb of RAM was complete overkill too, but it does mean that if I want to rearrange the world I have enough memory to do so.

A lot of people.

Very relevant.

I have sold every piece of Mac hardware I've put up for sale almost immediately.  The demand for them in huge and the residual value is exceptional.

I put a 480 gig SSD into my 2011 MBP last month, totally transformed my machine. For £160 it's given me life in my laptop for another few years and saved me a fortune as i was so close to buying a new one it was so slow.

Mac sold me my MBP and I utterly love it. It isn't just a laptop, it is an absolute pleasure to use. I'd like to get the missus using Mac machines - she has some Acer rubbish that takes 10 mins to load.

I've pondered whether I'd like a new Mac but in reality mine isn't stressed and if I need a boost, a 16Gb RAM upgrade and an SSD will make it seem like a brand new machine anyway.

Reading the early threads makes me a bit sad I bought Office for Mac 2011 recently. That said, I got one of our guys who was on a long-term project in the US to buy it over there - £50 for Excel, Word and PowerPoint, so I don't feel too hard done by.

Question - why is it the Mac version has the awesome presentation view on PPT, whereas my work Windows machine doesn't? It is such an awesome feature with the timer and preview.

Oh, and while in PC World today buying a replacement power charger for the work machine I was lusting over the 27' iMac - oh my god, they are utterly beautiful things.
