Amazing that Gerrard, in two phases of play, cost his Club the Premiership and his Nation the World Cup.

Next step - retirement and a Sofa spot on MoTD?

Was thinking the same.

It's a sorry state of affairs - reading a few differing Newspapers today, I sometimes wonder how many Football Journalists have played the game in the top flight, been exposed to the pressure in playing in the likes of the World Cup or even been exposed to intense physical training to reach peak fitness.

Some of the jingoistic rubbish they write is breathtaking....the simple truth is that many England players look washed out, flat footed and spent. They play far too much football, too often carrying injury and it shows in their performances.....

Pity but England never got into third gear last night and it's all but over for them all.......

I do hope it's Gerrard who comes home to burning/hanging effigies and the full scape goat campaign.

It'd make a refreshing change from it being a United player.

We all know that's not going to happen.

The 'supporters' have been blaming Wayne since first kick of the tournament, whilst (yet again) a totally inept Stevie Me gets away with being shite for England.

There is always one team that everyone dismisses at the start but end up surprising everyone. Costa Rica seem to be that team this year. It will be ironic if England beat them, although Costa Rica might rest some players for the next round:-)

Italy v Uruguay should be a good game.

As ever, Mash gets its right +++

ENGLAND can qualify for the second round of the World Cup if the remaining group games are played in a 12-dimensional universe.

Theoretical mathematicians at Cambridge University found that that England can progress if x = y-2z in a universe where England have already beaten Italy and the Costa Rican bus got lost on the way to Brazil.

Professor Julian Cook said: “That universe needs to have at least 12 dimensions because in all the possible outcomes in all the possible universes Steven Gerrard will still find a way to help the other team score.

“It’s called the Gerrard Constant and it’s a pain in the arse. What, just because I do maths for a living means I can’t be a football fan? That’s what’s wrong with this country.”

Professor Cook added: “Obviously Italy could beat Costa Rica and Uruguay and then England could hammer Costa Rica, but we’re going to go with the 12 dimensional universe – and some very impressive maths, even if I do say so myself.”

England manager Roy Hodgson has promised that the current squad could create a new ‘golden ratio’ of  disappointment, making the failure achieved by Lampard, Gerrard and the Coles look like a nursery school abacus.

Hodgson, himself a keen amateur mathematician, said: “The training regime will continue to be tackles that are 40 percent of what they should be and shots and passes that are wilfully approximate.”

I've not watched a minute of the tournament, least of all the pricks who play for England. Anyway, my sole contribution to this thread, and I'm far from an expert, is this.

I come back to the hotel room after a lovely meal with the inlaws, the missus is asleep, Master Andrew is sound asleep too and I check out the BBC Sports page out of curiosity and I see this:

"BBC pundits say England need to move forward after World Cup exit"

Is this a tactical suggestion or the empirical evidence we need that football is a sport played and commented on by those with an IQ less than my room number. I'm in room 7.

Andrew,

In all fairness, Football in the UK is a minority Sport.

If you look under the glare of Media pish, you'll actually find (from real figures) that more people actively participate in Curling, Badmintonn, Cricket and Bowling.

Football may be a supporters game but grass roots football, those that play the game on grass week in week out, is long gone...

Sad (that too many think it's actually our National game - not true).

I have absolutely no idea where you got that from.  Because it is absolute bollocks! :roflmao:

Sport England, combined with 3 research bodies to cover Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, top 10 participant sports in the UK (2012):

1.  General fitness/jogging/gym - 13.1%

2.  Football - 9.3%

3.  Swimming - 9.1%

4.  Golf - 6.9%

5.  Snooker - 4.3%
6.  Squash - 4.2%
=.  Badminton - 4.2%

8.  Darts - 3.9%

9.  Tennis - 3.1%

10. Cricket - 2.7%

Curling.  Fecking curling. :roflmao:

Go on, vote Yes. :roflmao:

My local park is full of people curling and playing badminton on Sunday mornings.

No, wait... they're playing football. Strange, that.

It's the 3rd biggest participation sport in the UK - behind swimming and athletics. Of course, 'swimming' could be 'paddle around a bit and sit in the hot tub for half an hour gossiping' and 'athletics' could be 'waddle around the park in a velour track suit and Reebok classics', so I'd not read too much into the 'top 2'.
