Scotty
My son broke his tablet but it was covered by the Square trade warranty I took out so I've got a full refund. Any recommendations ? It's just a toy for a 4 and 8 year old so I'm not throwing more than £100 at it.
Tipex
Not sure how much the Tesco Hudl is these days, but you can't go far wrong with one, think they are about to release a Hudl 2 as well.
Cuprabob
Asda were doing Samsung Tab 3 7" for £139 I've got a Tab 3 8" and it's spot on. Edited May 16, 2014 by Cuprabob
NewNiceMrMe
Possibly well timed because Amazon have got a superb offer on the Kindle HD (last generation) at the moment. £60 off - down to £99. Our youngest has one she uses for reading books (the school won't allow iPad's in, only Kindles!) and I have been very impressed with it. Some of the games are excellent and the graphics are incredibly sharp. Kindle HD down to £99 Edited May 16, 2014 by NewNiceMrMe
Andy_Bangle
(Aldi) MEDION LIFETAB E7316 - £75 quid (review) or Datawind UbiSlate 7Ci - £40 inc shipping (review). Neither are the best, but offer offer great value for money.
Torino101
I'd get a first generation NEXUS 7, I've got the second Gen and after seeing mine my old man picked up the first gen for around 110 but that was some time back, sure they'd be cheaper now. A great 7" tablet.
Twinspark
I have no idea when it comes to Android versions etc. Only know they have ridiculous names... But I got a mailing from the purveyors of discontinued tat a couple of days ago... they have some really cheap tablet deals. http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/c/563/Tablets-Touchscreens/
NewNiceMrMe
The problem with the UbiSlate (Ci and Cx) is simple - the battery life. Most users report no more than 3 hours. It is a massive flaw in what could have otherwise been a good machine.
Scotty
Thanks for the above. I looked at all. Not too keen on the Kindle just as I want to stay Android to keep wife and kids happy. Tesco's HUDL with vouchers is very tempting but then this has just come out which looks good value : http://www.ebuyer.com/629644-hisense-sero-8-tablet-pc-sero-8-e2281?utm_source=2014-05-29&utm_medium=campaign_email&utm_campaign=B2C_%28Thursday%29_All_FS
NewNiceMrMe
The Hisense Sero 8 has had good reviews too. As far as value for money goes it seems to be top of the pile if they prove to be reliable.
CarMad
The kindle is good for kids as you can get it to only be used as a reader after a certain time for example so they don't use it to play games late at night. A couple of collegues have them for the kids even though they have iPads themselves and have been impressed. Not full on Android but that can in some respects be better maybe!? NewNiceMrMe
I can't fault the Kindles, in any form. The HD Fire is superb and you've said exactly what we've ended up with (albeit not in place of). She has an iPad (v3 or 4, can't remember), but she has the Kindle too. The Kindle is vastly superior for reading on and the battery life is exceptional (although I think it is on on iPad too). The software availability for the Kindle is very good indeed and the quality of software is high too. I'd never really given them any thought until we had to get her one for school, but we now have two in the house (original and HD) and I love the little original device. It's just so simple it is stupidly good - and the life of a single charge never ceases to amaze me. I agree with you, CarMad. I think the Kindle is better than an Android device in some respects. If it was my money, even though I know what Scotty is probably thinking from a choice perspective, I'd take a Kindle over an Android tablet every time. They just seem in a league above and from a childs perspective they are blindingly simple to use. Edited May 29, 2014 by NewNiceMrMe

Scotty
I ended up going for the one I linked to above. It got my son's thumbs up. It's got good reviews but I'll see how we go once it arrives - due Monday.
