CarMad
I'm more than happy with my Virgin, I'm getting 159Mbps the last speed check I did, that will do nicely. They have had a few DNS issues last week but I just changed to Google for a couple of nights and all is fine again. What wireless standard do the 6/7 year old machines support? Some do have trouble with later standards. Try and upgrade the OS / Firmware on the network car it might help.
DaveP
You could buy a (small) wifi dongle. You might be able to replace the card in the laptop - I bought a newer style card for mine (802.11n) for about £10. But the stupid HP laptop said that the card was the wrong one and would not boot out of BIOS
johnny11
Can anyone help me out here on what I have to do to try and connect the two existing laptops to the new router. BT talk about a dongle that I may have to purchase ! Rather not start shelling out for new laptops. //beggingforhelp//. A few things I found to help was long into the home hub 5 and change the wireless channel on the advanced wireless to 9 and do not choose auto select do manual instead. Also you might want to change the adaptor settings to just b & g and not n, I found this helped connect my 5 year old toshiba satellite laptop to the network. DaveP
download wifi analyser on your phone and scan the wifi near you. Identify a nice quiet channel and use that.
gizze
I have been with Zen for the last 10 years, I used to get 19meg, and I just took for granted that it was always there. I had an uptime of just over a year on my router, even though power cuts it kept running as it was on a back up power supply. I moved to BT last year on my main line, mainly because I wanted BT Sport, I connect at 78 megs but it doesn't feel as snappy as my old Zen, and I often get moments where web pages simply don't load, wait a minute or two and they are back, but not ideal. But my main problem is how many websites are blocked!! I am into my music and a lot of people post their sets on file sharing websites, problem is BT block them as there is also films and TV shows etc. on there. Complete pain in the arse and means I have had to keep a 20meg Zen account up and running on another line, may as well just have paid for BT Sport. Mac
Change your DNS provider - Google's on 8.8.8.8 are pretty good.
Soulboy
I would love to get BT internet - but I keep getting told by BT staff in India (who must pass a special test in not being able to speak any English) that we have no phone line in the new house. Which is strange.... as the Openreach engineer who called and trunked it up to the front of the house weeks ago is pretty sure he fitted a new phone line and not an extra gas pipe. So over a month after having a text confirming my line would be in, I have got fook all. Luckily, I bought a signal booster and am jumping onto someone else's using that BT fon thingy.
