bazza_g
These are some bold claims from Revo which I'd normally take with a pinch of salt but on this occassion seem to be backed up by Video VBox timing on Youtube. Can a Golf R with just a ECU flash really knock the 0-60 down to 3.7 seconds? Discuss.... Stage 1 is designed to work in harmony with an otherwise totally standard car to give gains of upto 75BHP and 80FT/LB using pump fuel, over the standard 296BHP and 280FT/LB with fantastic gains throughout the rev range giving better drivability and increased performance whether you're on the road or the race track. Our test vehicles have clocked repeatable 0-60 MPH times of 3.7 seconds along with a 0-100MPH times of just 9 seconds, both timed at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground. An impressive improvement over the standard times of 4.9 seconds to 60MPH and 12.3 to 100MPH for the DSG equipped test mule.

Rachel
What does it do to fuel/oil consumption and engine/transmission life? It's easy to do stupid power, not so easy to keep all the bits in working order like a stock one.

It's easy to do stupid power, not so easy to keep all the bits in working order like a stock one. Have no idea, I guess its probably at the limit of the stock turbo as they claim this is just a flash... Have they turned up the boost to a point so it'll go bang in 2 weeks? Are the AFR, knock, wastegate duty figures all still nice and safe? How does an extra 75bhp take over a second off the 0-60? So many questions.... Torino101
371BHP from a 2 litre engine. That's going to last well
Biscuits
Well, the A45 AMG is 360bhp stock... so I guess it's possible the VW lump will last a little, while it's churning out 371bhp. I do think it's asking for trouble and VW can categorically tell if the ECU's been reflashed with this engine
patently
I think they might guess it's been flashed after they try to drive it into the workshop?
ashleywater
Having driven a standard car for a weekend, including around Pembrey, I suspect that stock, they are quicker than the manufacturers quoted 0-60 In regards to the output of the tweeked motor on the Golf R400 throws out 400Hp using the EA88 block without apparently a huge amount of mods over the stock 300 Hp lump I have to say the new R is a much better drivers machine than the new S3 is, and TBH the new R is a pretty mega hatchback to drive, the steering is awesome and no noticeable understeer on the limit The new GTI does not compare and seems way under powered even with performance pack against the new R Just my two cents on the subject I will definitely be in the market for an R400 if as the rumour mill suggests, it goes into production
Ian_C
Doubt the R400 will ever see the light of day. The R (and S3) are proper performance bargains though - and I agreed they are almost certainly quicker than the manufacturers claims, a common German trait! One question though - is the Revo car on stock road tyres?
ashleywater
Doubt the R400 will ever see the light of day. ? I tend to agree, but hey one can always hope I figure that the inclusion of black boxes in all new european vehicles from next year? Is going to put the mockers on pretty much every performance variant currently available, and "Fast" cars much like large capacity fossil burning engines will be a thing of the past, They will be quite simply "Big Brothered" and "Regulated" from all of European roads in the next few years, and Car manufacturers are only to aware of the direction that the EU are taking in this regard We will all be driving around in speed limited, fully real time monitored "UP's" powered by a "Bunny" battery before the decade is out No surprise then that car manufacturers all seem to be targeting Asian and other such currently "unregulated" markets
Soulboy
New S3 will do 3.77s 0-60 with just one of those tuning box efforts. Everything else standard (interesting that standard cars are still clocking 0-60 in 4.25s!). And the dealers cant pick them up apparently (but I am pretty certain they will if it gets towed in!). From AudiSport: I was very sceptical yes, however, knowing that the stock ECU is still in charge of all the protection measures, it was enough to convince me to buy one. What's the alternative? No remap solutions and even when one is released, it will most probably leave a warranty flag. This blackmarks the car on the central Audi system, bye bye warranty. Even going in for a routine service will trigger it as soon as it's hooked upto diagnostics. The tuning box therefore has this massive advantage. If anything does go wrong, not long to remove and in for warranty work. I can confirm that nothing is seen in VCDS, everything reads stock. The big question was, how do they compare against proper remaps? I was sceptical and didn't think they would be any good if I'm being honest, it goes against everything I have learned over the years as a petrolhead but hey, firm believer in you can't knock it until you've tried it and the results speak for themselves. Standard - 0-60 = 4.25, 0-100 = 10.45Tuning Box - 0-60 = 3.77, 0-100 = 8.92That is remap gains proved by the figures revo provided with their Golf R.I do have to say though, when I add the hardware, I'll probably need to opt for a Stage 2 remap as the tuning box does not get rid of the 155 limiter, not will it delete the CEL light when I remove the cats. Anyway, if there are people sitting on the fence, buy one. The boxes are transferrable to other S3 cars unlike remaps so when a remap does come out and you swap over, it will be easy enough to recoup some of the cost by selling the box on. (I'm sure Andrew doesn't mind me stating this as that is exactly what he said to me)I will only move over if they bypass TD1 and leave no trace though. Bugger being black marked on the central system. Not just for warranty work but for finance buy out reasons too. Busby
ABT offer two options - 370bhp and 400bhp - which daisy chain the existing ECU rather than flashing it. The stock ECU parameters are used whilst everything is cold but as things come up to temperature and the ABT box sees that, it switches to use the new parameters. In the event of anything it doesn't like the look of occuring it swicthes back to the stock ECU. In Germany any work done by ABT doesn't affect the VW warranty as they have an arrangment with them but not sure how that translates to the UK. There were some German guys at VW while I was there who had ABT S4's - they were seriously rapid, but they were also warranted. We asked the question and no such arrangement is in place for the British market I was told it is possible to buy a RHD ABT modded car and import it. Totally agree with that, the new S3 is not bad either and the build quality is better IMO than the R, and is actually cheaper if you spec the leather option on the Golf Both these cars are super stealth, and in particular the Golf R, just passed one on the M4 and apart from the lower stance and quad pipes, looks pretty much no different than a standard Golf The GTI is much more identifiable amd far less subtle
